Ben & Jerry's makes `Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road'

By JOHN CURRAN – 4 days ago

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Ben & Jerry's has done it again: Hoping to honor rocker Elton John before his first-ever Vermont performance, Vermont's crazy-cool confectioner has whipped up a flavor just for him — "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road."

The limited-batch ice cream, made from "an outrageous symphony of decadent chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cookie dough, butter brickle and white chocolate chunks," is a take-off on his 1970s album and song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

It will be available from July 18 to July 25 in the company's Vermont scoop shops, with proceeds going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, officials said Tuesday.

It'll also be doled out in cups, cones and dishes at John's sold-out Champlain Valley Expo show Monday.

The Burlington-based ice cream maker — whose rock 'n' roll-themed products have honored late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia ("Cherry Garcia") and Vermont-bred jam rockers Phish ("PhishFood") — wanted to toast John because he was finally getting around to playing the Green Mountain State.

He's performed in every other U.S. state.

All I can say about this flavor is no thank you. Sounds like a gloppy mess to me- not unlike John's music. I'm making ice cream today- honey double ginger with fresh ginger and crystallized ginger. I'll stick to that- and skip the concert too.

1. I'm finding that less is definitely more with ice cream
The period of throwing more and more chunks of, whatever, into a nice smooth ice cream, are largely over for me. Butter pecan or a nice mango chunk, maybe, but otherwise, just the ice cream and leave out the chunks.

2. well, I'm a big fan of good peach and strawberry ice creams
with chunks of fruit. It's the throwing in the kitchen sink that makes my gorge rise. And cookie dough in ice cream is just revolting.

8. Agreed. B&J don't seem to make new fruit-based flavors anymore.
I used to like Rule Britannia (strawberry with chocolate covered shortbread mini-cookies), but it's been gone for a long time now. :(

3. When will B & J go retro and make a new flavor, "White Rabbits' Pot Party"?

Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 08:59 AM by hendo
when they made an Obama flavor? Everyone said it was a great idea back then.

edit: and Primary Berry Graham is still one of the best flavors of all time. I just wish they would bring it back.

6. Elton John is awesome
and this ice cream sounds great. In fact I am calling my in-laws, who live in VT, today and asking them to pick up a hand packed quart so that I can try it when I go out to visit them in August. I just wish that I was going out before the end of July so that I could pick up some myself.

11. You made a post just to dump on B&J and Elton John?
I cannot figure out what motivates people to do something like that. What's the point?

I could make dozens of posts about things I don't particularly like, but others do. I don't do that because there's no point to making others feel bad about what they like, just so that I can look down my nose at them. Sometimes it's best to just keep your opinions to yourself.

15. Doesn't sound too bad to me.
I think I'd prefer the ice cream to the concert, though!

If it doesn't have chocolate, I'm not sure there's a point with candy or ice cream.

not sure if I'd like this one though; not mad on peanut butter (it may be my not being American!)

Never was a big fan of Elton John's music, but we've had much worse.

Your honey and ginger ice cream sounds delicious!

(As some may guess, ice cream has always been one of my fatal temptations!)

21. So, what you're saying...
is that I have less than 5 days to drive 2000 miles if I want to try that ice cream?

Darn.

Vermont got lucky this week.
