An Example of Why We're Fucked
Here's an email I received today from a vendor that fabricates printed circuit boards, a nasty and toxic business:

"For our Printed Circuit Board customers using Chinese vendors, please be aware of the following air quality policy announcement from Chinese authorities:

In preparation for the Olympics, China has announced a factory shutdown for 9 weeks to clear smog and improve air quality in a 200 kilometer radius of Beijing. The shutdown begins July 17th and will extend until September 20th. Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Shandong provinces are affected by the shutdown.

If air quality does not improve before the start of the Olympics, there may be an expansion of the shutdown. There are concerns there could also be a bottleneck at two main ports.

All this to say that if you have a PCB vendor in the affected area, we are available to take care of your printed circuit board requirements. In addition to our large fabrication facility here in XXXXXX, we also have offshore partners in other non-affected countries that are available to handle the larger volumes."

Virtually all electronics are now created and assembled in China or other micro-wage countries where the environment is of little or no importance. Not needing to comply with environmental codes saves even more money.

There used to be significant tariffs on incoming goods from China to offset this earth-destroying price advantage, but these tariffs were essentially gotten rid of when the DLC ran the White House.

So now we lose jobs, AND the environment is fucked. Wheeee.....

1. Millions of Chinese 'happy campers.'
First they tear down their houses, then they throw them out of work.

3. This year's Olympics
Is actually creating a shortage of nitromethane in the USA.

This is really putting the hurt on nitro drag racing this summer!

4. You think we are fucked now?
wait till after the olympics. When they realize one of two things.

if orders are down, then production will remain down.

if orders are up and backlogged, if you think the pollution is bad now, wait till then when they try to play catch up.
