1. Stop it
Nobody believes that.

You wouldn't be able to find one person on this board and maybe even in general who would assent to that statement, so you should stop pretending that some people think that.

Strawman arguments are more embarrassing for the builder.

Is that the sarcasm part? That some would have you believe it? Because that seems like the sincere part, and it's utterly ridiculous. Nobody thinks that.

7. Many people on DU are constantly bitching about the South
- telling us to secede again, saying we're all stupid, backward or Republican voters. It does seem, at least on this board, that many DO believe that.

The point of the OP is that the South is not monolythic. In some Southern states, somewhere between 43 and 49 percent of us don't vote Republican. We can't help that a tiny majority outweighs our votes.

In fact, the mid-west is far redder than the South (take a look at some "purple" maps), but we don't hear about them in the fashion some on DU ascribe to the South.

14. Nobody on this board believes that...it's an utterly ridiculous and self-pitying claim
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 11:23 AM by alcibiades_mystery
It's even pathetic.

You certainly have some legitimate gripes about the way *some* people feel about your region. So do we all, I suspect. To elevate it into the ridiculous is just cheap. Everyone on these boards knows that racism is a national and even global phenomenon from which no region is immune. So stop pretending otherwise. It's embarrassing, and - worse - it's false.

24. Apparently, the people who also answered me don't
find it pathetic.

And.. plenty of people on this board believe that. You obviously have been missing the thread.

I saw one just the other day that called for the South to secede again. It was subtle and wasn't in the subject line, but they said it.

It must be nice to live in your world.

Totally false. I'm not missing any thread. Nobody fucking believes that. Shift the ground all you want. It's bullshit.

Somehow, people from New York City and California manage to get shit on all day without becoming whining fuckwads about it. Would that DUers from other regions would follow the example.

Lemme tell you that I would rather call a SouthEastern state than any other. The worst states to call are out west. NW Pacific is especially bad. People say that the East coast is full of assholes... no. Easterners are blunt.

Meh anyways nicest people live in the South. Shame that there are a ton of racists down there. Not everyone is a racist, but it's WAY more out in the open. Especially in Florida. Holy crap.

19. Those DU'ers ignore stats
The stats are showing net migration of blacks FROM other areas of the country INTO the south.

If the south had so much suckitude, racism, hate crimes, etc. that would not be happening.

One of the last remaining bigotries that is accepted in MSM and especially among those of the left is making fun of southerners, especially white southerners.

It's the "politically correct bigotry" frankly.

45. For two straight elections, the south has voted - as a block - for the GOP
Not one blue state south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Not one.

So... our opinions about the south are not without justification. Ever since Nixon and his "Southern Strategy" the south has been solidly Republican most years.

The midwest, however, has not. Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois have all gone Democratic at least once in the past few elections.

The mid-west is NOT redder than the south. Not yet.

"What is wrong with all the people who live there?" kind of comment on this board.

While I personally have several least favorite states or cities (one that in personal conversation I will readily admit you could not pay me enough to live there), all of those places have their enthusiastic supporters, and so I refrain from being so rude in a public forum.

18. Racism in Louisiana
I wonder in what area of Louisiana did you work? I live in a mixed race neighborhood, and all neighborhoods in New Orleans are a mix of races. Given that America has a history of racism, and that very overt racism is in our fairly recent past, I consider that everyone in America is still suffering from the vestiges of racism, even if they do not want to be one. I'm wondering what your experience is living in Texas? Where do you live that you find to be so much less racist than your experience in Louisiana, post Katrina? Do blacks and whites in your neighborhood congregate freely with equality in some idyllic world? I doubt it. America's struggle with racism is a work in progress, but I find New Orleans to be pretty cool...we all live around each other, we work side by side, and we populate the neighborhood bars...essentially, we communicate with one another daily. Of course, this is not yet a perfect color-blind, equal opportunity country...and there are still problems to be overcome. But my opinion is that down here in New Orleans, on a basic everyday level among everyday people, we are fairly comfortable with one another and living in a more integrated community than I've experienced anywhere else in America. So yeah, where did you work in Louisiana, and what were your experiences that lead you to make such a harsh statement about the entire state?

Some people from other parts of the US imply or outright say that the racism in the South is so much worse than in other regions.

They need to google Howard Beach, sundown towns, discrimination against Asians in the Western states.

11. Nonsense. The South is where human values are preserved and all life is treasured.
The 'Heart of Dixie' is the cradle of human civilization, where education is embraced, and cultural diversity nurtured. Grace, civility, and respect for honest labor reign supreme below the Mason-Dixon line ... the Source of all things worth preserving in the Union.

In the OP, the poster pretends that the rest of the country or DUers think something that they don't, exaggerating beyond any reasonable claim the positions of his or her imaginary opponents.

In TN's post, TN pretends that the Great Southern Warriors on DU think something that they don't, exaggerating beyond any reasonable claim the position of the Great Southern Warriors on DU.

They are exactly parallel distortions, in fact, which is why TN's post is by far the more cutting satire. Whereas TN seems aware that nobody actually holds such a silly position, the OP actually seems to think that some people believe the ridiculous claim. Which makes the OP's far worse a strawman.
