Better late than never — impeach Bush and Cheney

Finally, Democrats are moving to impeach the administration of those now controlling the Oval Office. For nearly eight years, President Bush and Vice President Cheney have lied to the American people. They have launched a war that is unconstitutional and unjustified. They have imprisoned thousands of people — some of them women and children — without due process, and then proceeded to torture them. They have spied on American households. They have laughed while they trashed the concepts of due process, habeas corpus, privacy, the Geneva Convention, and basic decency. No one has held them accountable for this tyrannical behavior — until now.

When Rep. Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House, she became one of the most powerful women in the world. Pelosi has long been critical of the current administration’s "war on terror" and the propaganda that surrounds it. Yet, before she even ascended to her current position, she made it clear that impeaching Bush was not on her agenda. Thus for two years, Democrats have held a majority in Congress and yet have not moved to impeach.

Why did Pelosi think America put Democrats in office? To pat Bush’s back and wink at his crimes?

We can understand the reluctance to impeach. Democrats became quite allergic to the whole process after President Clinton was dragged through impeachment over what should have remained a private affair (pun intended). Millions of dollars were wasted proving that the man had, indeed, cheated on his wife. Conservatives and progressives alike took umbrage at the president’s dalliance with a White House intern — but few Americans considered his personal failure a crime against the country.

Less than a decade later, Republicans are no longer bothered by adultery. Sen. John McCain not only cheated on his wife Carol; when Carol became disabled, he ditched her for a younger model, marrying the blonde, 25-year-old Cindy within one month of his divorce. Aren’t Republicans, who claim to be the standard-bearers of moral behavior, appalled at McCain’s sexual behavior? On the contrary — they want to make him president of the United States! Adultery is now passé for Republican politicians.

President Clinton was found innocent of the charges leveled against him, yet his impeachment affects Democratic thinking today. Some Democratic leaders apparently forgot that our forefathers established impeachment as an avenue toward justice. Impeachment should not be used as a partisan act of character assassination, as it was in Clinton’s case. But when a president has used the office to thwart the Constitution and commit war crimes, then impeachment is not only justified; it is absolutely necessary.

Thank you, Rep. Kucinich, for having the courage to stand up for justice. At this late stage in Bush’s second term, some are tempted to just let things ride. Some would even say it is "too late" for impeachment.

In a democratic republic, it is never too late to hold our leaders accountable for senseless killing.
It is never too late to hold an elected official accountable for propagating 935 documented lies
(visit http://www.publicintegrity.org) in order to invade another nation. It is never too late to
proclaim that America is about freedom, not imperialism. It is never too late for justice.

Read the actual articles of impeachment at http://kucinich.house.gov/spotlightissues/documents.htm.

5. And, Jerry Bremer for fucking it all up in Iraq.
I'd like to just keep this list going. If it takes 20-30, they all need prison for life.

4. Impeachment Does Nothing About This
Impeachment does nothing to go after the direct criminality of this regime...or anyone who wasn't elected. I agree, all these war criminals need to be prosecuted for their crimes....and it's gonna take time to do it. The evidence is there and in time it will come out.

6. They may be hauled in when they are in their 70s or 80s.
After running and hiding all over the world. But, yes, one day they will be held accountable.

7. Look At Bosnia
They finally got Karadovich...a real butcher. It took 13 years and from what I remember reading, this dude was hiding in plain sight. Justice delayed, but justice, I hope, nonetheless.

The problem with going after this regime right now is that boooshie won't hesitate to pardon or immunize anyone and everyone who is summmoned to testify. Unless a court destroys this abuse of power (and repugnican Judge Bates is sure taking his time on those contempt citations) few will come forward and anyone indicted will be pardoned and then there goes any chance to prosecute within the U.S.

Right now Rove is daring to be indicted...he wants that "Get Out Of Jail". Their hopes are that Gramps wins and keeps the lid on all the crimes and corruption. This is why elections matter. A Democratic President with larger Democratic majorities in both houses will make a hugh difference in starting to unravel all that has gone on in the past 7 1/2 years.

Cheers...

12. You Better Believe I'll Be Watching
One of my first jobs was to sit and engineer the 1974 House Judiciary Committee Hearings. I sat through all of them and was riveted by what I was hearing (there was no TV coverage...only via NPR). That's where I first met folks like John Conyers, Charlie Rangel, Paul Sarbanes, Elizabeth Holtzman...but also asshats like Trent Lott (who voted AGAINST all articles on Nixon but for Clinton's conviction).

I was hoping they'd call Jon Turley to testify...and the problem isn't what to investigate, but where to start. The list is overwhelming, but it needs to be focused as well...finding one set of charges (which is what Kucinich appears to be doing) and go for that...other charges can be added later.

Cheers...

13. I'm Hoping The Ball Really Starts To Roll
After the elections. Remember, the GOOP ramrodded Clinton's impeachment through during the lame duck session AFTER the elections. There were some there who voted to impeach who had lost elections and were on their way out. Maybe if the GOOP gets its ass kicked hard enough, there may be enough votes in the House to at least get articles passed before this regime is removed by the voters.

16. I doubt I can do it live.
I'm not sure what the rules are to attend a committee hearing, but I was in attendance in the House gallery on Tuesday evening when Kucinich presented the resolution on the house floor. The rules were so strict regarding what you couldn't bring, that I brought absolutely nothing except my driver's license and ticket. "No battery operated electronics" pretty much rules out anything - cameras, computers, etc.

This time, I plan to bring a notebook (actual paper, not a computer) and jot down some notes.

24. It will be done. BUT
The Democrats will gain enough seats in Both the House and senate that when the New Congress is sworn in, in January that it will go through both the House and Senate in hours, and Bush and Cheney will be impeached and Convicted. But before he can be removed He will Declare Himself Dictator For Life by declaring Marshall Law and he will dissolve the Government and be the Sole Command Leader
