Obama has to choose someone like Wes Clark for VP
The media whores are letting mccain's statement that the surge worked, that he was always right about Iraq go unquestioned

The credentials of Clark and his experience are impecible

2. No he doesn't. He has to choose someone he's comfortable with.
And the hell with the m$m. Watch Obama at that presser in Jordan today; the affirmations will be coming in that this man knows what he's talking about. That, in the coming days, will become even more evident.

6. Of course he needs to be comfortable with that person, but I believe he will be at a
disadvantage unless he chooses someone with military experience

The media is not even questioning mccain's credentials, they are painting him as someone with extensive military experience, without asking about the QUALITY of that experience

Obama can stand on his own, but it my view it would help blunt the misrepresentations coming from the mccain camp by Obama choosing a person with military and international experience

12. The jury's out on whether someone with a military background is
a priority. I've read all kinds of opinions. I guess we'll see.

18. Exactly what military qualifications did the following have that was pertinent?
Kennedy/Johnson

Johnson/Humphrey

Nixon/Agnew

Ford/Rockefeller

Carter/Mondale

Reagan/Bush

Bush/Quayle

Clinton/Gore

Bush/Cheney

The last with real relevant military qualifications was Dwight Eisenhower. Serving in the military without any leadership position doesn't qualify one to have the necessary military experience needed to be President. Military experience does not make one the best candidate for anything except following orders.

19. Obama's opinion is at post #17: he doesn't see the need to hire
someone from the military, or didn't.

3. No he doesn't have to appoint anyone in particular
as much as I would like to see him consider Clark its not a deal breaker for me or I can't see it as for anyone else, those of us that matters anyway. If someone will vote or not for Obama because of his vp pick is going to vote the way they do no matter what. They might tell you that but I wouldn't buy it.

the media whores have nothing to do with my decision as I don't watch or pay them any attention anyway excepting of course KO and Bill Moyers.

8. It isn't a deal break for US, however, I believe it would bolster his campaign
against the lies and misrepresentations coming from the mccain camp, unquestionably propagated by the MSM

4. Word has it that he's concentrating his search
among top military who were forced out for contradicting PNAC and AIPAC on foreign policy and military matters.

My guess is that the pick will be somebody we never heard of.

Clark doesn't need the job. He would be an inspired pick, but I doubt he'd take it.

9. Doesn't have to be Clark, but someone to go against the argument
that mccain's experience is so great, which it isn't, if you look at his voting record

7. That would be a brilliant choice....top military credentials and an outside the beltway guy to boot.
....This has always been my hope...a brilliant ticket to combat the "national security credentials" of Crasher McCain...

13. Looking down the road eight years ...
It would be nice if he'd pick someone who'd make a great PRESIDENT following him ... like Gore, Kerry, ... I love Leon Panetta from Carmel California ... I think The DLC will be thinking longterm ... we need to keep the NEOCONS out as long as possible ... like forever ...

14. Juan Coles take on this meme
http://www.juancole.com/

Hey, everybody, ask McCain if he'll pull out US troops by 2010 if that is what the Iraqi government says it wants.

McCain keeps boasting about being "right" about the "surge" and saying Obama was "wrong."

Look, it is more important that McCain was consistently wrong. He was wrong about the desirability of going to war against Iraq. He was wrong about it being a cakewalk. He was wrong about there being WMD there. He was wrong about everything. And he was wrong about the troop escalation making things better. The casualty figures dropped in al-Anbar, where few extra US troops were ever sent. They dropped in Basra, from which the British withdrew. Something happened. Putting it all on 30,000 extra troops seems a stretch. And what about all the ethnic cleansing and displacing of persons that took place under the nose of the "surge?" McCain has been wrong about everything to do with Iraq. And he is boasting about his wisdom on it!

16. IT probably won't happen, as Clark plays hardball with the right. Expect somebody more centrist.
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 11:26 AM by napoleon_in_rags
It was pretty clear when Clark made his totally appropriate critism of McCain not gaining military leadership credentials from being a prisoner of war, and Obama distancing himself from it. Obama isn't as interested in taking them on as directly as Wes Clark.

17. This is how Obama looks at picking someone in the military...
At a fundraiser in April, Barack Obama was asked, long before he’d locked down the nomination, about the kind of qualities he’s looking for in a running mate. “I would like somebody who knows about a bunch of stuff that I’m not as expert on,” he said. “I think a lot of people assume that might be some sort of military thing to make me look more Commander-in-Chief-like. Ironically, this is an area — foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than … Senator McCain.”

It was a reminder that when it comes to his perceived liability, Obama sees a strength. In fact, he’s not lacking in confidence on the issue — asked this week whether he has any “doubts” about the power of his foreign-policy vision, Obama said, simply, “Never.”

21. Wes Clark would have been a good choice. Until the right totally twisted his
words around. Now I think it would be poison to put him on the ticket.
