I steamed green beans and the water was red?
This is the 2nd time this has happened. They were fresh from the garden of my neighbor. We've been having lots of orange smoke here in Nor Cal because of the fires so I wonder if that could be the problem. I boiled corn from another source but the water wasn't red and both times I steamed the beans was in two different steamers. I know the grape growers here are worried about the smoke's effect on the grapes because in another month harvest will kick in. I'm not so sure I want to drink local wine from 2008.

That's what I'm thinking
Some kind of chemical reaction might be happening there.

17. I lived on a farm, with a well, and the water 'looked' clear

until you took a shower!! My bathtub was always rusty looking and we had to get Culligan services to 'soften' the H2O.
Besides that, it smelled like sulpher and I was pregnant and it made me sick to even brush my teeth. :puke:

3. Could it be the flame retardant
They drop red chemicals that are a flame retardant. Could those have been carried by the wind to your plants?

12. Oh dear, there were plenty planes flying around with that stuff.
For the past week the air's been smoky again with an orange sun.

5. Is your neighbor using Chelated Iron on any nearby shrubbery or trees?
You might ask.

6. Well, the corn would be shielded by the husks. Did you wash off the beans before?

13. Husks weren't on, and I did wash the beans 3 times.
Neighbor doesn't use anything. We're in the country surrounded by vineyards.

15. Right...I meant the corn husks would have prevented any stuff from getting on the cobs
while they were on the stalk and then would be thrown away when you stripped them off. But then beans don't have that sort of covering so it has to be a chemical reaction of some kind...probably as others have suggested the precipitation of iron oxide. Strange.

16. I've steamed loads of beans in the past without this reaction.
That orange dust is everywhere, in the house, on the clothes I hang out to dry. I feel bad for the birds. It's worse than then Los Angeles where I lived for a very long time. We've had about 4 weeks of this.

18. Well then I think MikeE is right, it's probably the fire retardant. Good news is
it isn't toxic. Just looks nasty. :D

19. Then I wonder why the grape growers are so worried.
"My, my...this wine has a camp fire taste"

"I say Niles, I'm inclined to disagree...it has high notes of Marlboros"

20. Well, it might affect the bouquet a little but I imagine they're more concerned about interference
with photosynthesis...and maybe pollination or fruition. When is their harvest season?

7. are the beans inside red? It might just be the type of bean they are
My parents grew blue beans once, and the water was blue.

14. No, these are regular snap beans but they were a little stringy from being on the vine too long.

8. The fire fighting planes have dropped literally tons of

fire retardants on the fire ravaged areas. Various wind patterns have carried this stuff all over the Bay Area. I've had a nagging cough and headaches since the fires started and I know that I am very senstive to the fire retardant chemicals (from commerical mattresses and box springs).

so the red/pink stuff combined with the smoke and ash, well I guess that's why we've had the warnings to stay inside because of the air quality.

Oh yeah, they were also spraying for the brown moth. So we're getting it from all sides. :-(

I really worry about my animals too.

9. Pretty normal. Beans, even when their are white or green, contain lots of iron.
Try this experiment. Peel a potatoe and put it inside a bowl of water. Leave the bowl on the fridge for 3 days. The potatoes will turn redish.
