Wait - hear me out.

We need the numbers. The numbers that turned out for the primaries.

The record numbers of voters that kept blowing the minds of the various talking heads.

For the primaries, we beat the GOP 2 to 3. That means for every 2 Democratic Voters there was only 1 Republican one.

The GOP does not give a rats ass about this election. They are in disarray. Even though they can cheat, they can't stop a landslide. We need that. They know they can't have it and are preparing for the next one.

If we can get those same numbers out we will win.

Remember: Clinton did not vote for FISA.

These are both the elite of the Democratic Party.

Elite in the sense that they have risen up in a meritocracy, as opposed to the GOP which is a kleptocracy.

If its Obama/Clinton we will win, and we will win.

5. You're crazy.
Sorry, Hillary would bring the wingnuts out in droves. They'd have a reason to vote that they don't have now.

And anyhow, Hillary represents the Washington-as-usual, corporate crap Obama claims he's trying to get away from.

No thanks to Hillary. He can do a lot better.

19. Because those people love Obama and will stay home if Clinton is off the ticket?
That's not what the numbers are showing. The greater danger is the number of people who won't vote for Obama if Clinton is not on the ticket. Here in Texas, she motivated the Hispanic community the way Obama motivated the African American community. The numbers were off the charts of Hispanic voters who had never even registered before turning out for Clinton. Many of them feel bitterly angry at Obama for the way he handled the caucuses in Texas. Clinton won the popular vote largely on Hispanic turnout, but Obama commando-raided the caucuses and got more delegates. Many Hispanics hate him. They feel he stole their vote. Internal polling here in Texas shows that many of them will vote Republican, maybe even become Republican if the Democrats don't do something to reclaim them.

She brings a lot more voters to the ticket than she drives away. I've got a couple of friends who work in the industry, and they all say Obama might win Texas with her on the ticket. Without her, he has no chance. And including her on the ticket could even sway some of the other elections by increasing Democratic turnout. We keep hearing about how much she motivates the other side, but the polling showed that Obama was hated worse, across the nation, by Republicans.

And that's not even getting into the older Democrats who were more comfortable with Clinton's experience. Younger voters value passion more, older voters value experience more, as a generalization.

She's his strongest choice. And I disagree--I don't think he can do better. I think he can win with other choices, but I don't think he can do better.

There are many good choices for VP who don't have the baggage that the Clinton name brings.

14. You're crazy.
Obama already has massive voter excitement and a huge ground game to drive turnout on the left. There is only so much room to improve there.

McCain puts his base to sleep. UNLESS you add Hillary to the ticket, then his base begins frothing at the mouth about Clintons back in the White house and they all turn out to vote against that happening. You know they will, the republicans have spent the last decade conditioning the conservatives in this country to react instantly and negatively to the word "Clinton". And Obama and Clinton are just a HORRIBLE match. Obama is the change candidate, Hillary is the old Washington democratic establishment. Obama relies to large degree on non partisan appeal, Hillary is quite possible the single most nationally polarizing figure in the entire Democratic party... she would slaughter his cross-over vote while energizing conservatives to turn out for McCain. Plus she went way over the line in her attacks during the primary, so add on the McCain campaign commercials composed of nothing but video of our VP candidate saying McCain is more qualified to be president than Obama is... hey, THAT would be tons of fun.

Horrible, terrible, ridiculous idea. Always has been, remains so today. Just because she turned out lots of Democrats in the primaries that does not make her a good running mate in a national campaign on an Obama ticket.

20. No, I don't think so -
I could live with Hillary as VP if she would completely dump Bill. She has some baggage but hers combined with his will destroy everything Obama has worked for and has campaigned for. How can he change the way Washington politics functions with TWO Clintons living in the White House again. NOPE -- not an option. Obama is doing just fine without the Clintons.

22. You are correct about Clinton, but one quibble about a common mistake around here.
The numbers who turned out for the primaries don't mean jack. The Republicans did not have a contested race, the Democrats did. Also, the Democrats usually have higher turnout in primaries, because we have more activists and loyalists. The Republicans have fewer people who get worked up about politics, but they usually get the middle voters who only turn out for the general.

If I recall, in 2004 and in 2000 we had much higher turnout in the primaries than the Republicans did. And while we won in 2000 (and maybe 2004), we didn't win by a landslide.

24. Primary season is OVER!
Obama will draw an acceptable number of Dems on his own. He needs to draw Indys and crossover Republicans to win (the same (in reverse) is true for McCain).

Clinton would be an abysmally stupid choice for VP...which is why Obama won't select her.

25. As a FORMER Republican I can assure you -
the Repugs and McLame will have a field day if Hillary is on our ticket. You think Grumps JMac is playing dirty now - put Hillary on that ticket and see what happens. The extra few votes Hillary might bring are not worth losing this election - too big a risk and Obama doesn't need her anyway.

38. Yes, but why give him a tanker truck of gasoline for his fire?
She won't gain us a single crossover Repub vote, she'll result in a net loss of Indys, and she'll motivate usually-non-voting Repubs to come to the polls to vote against her.

She's a losing proposition.

27. Clinton would bring out many voters for Obama, but even more for McCain
I think you may well be right, and Clinton might well add more to Obama's tally than any other possible veep.

But she'd bring out even more voters for McCain.

The Republican party isn't greatly enthused right now - I think we have a decent chance of a low Republican turnout in November.

But if Clinton is the veep, they'll come out like hornets whose hive has been kicked - the Republicans despise Obama, but they hate the Clintons with a passion it's hard to overstate.

Obama should give Clinton a role in his administration, but he should pick someone less controversial as running mate.
