McCain vetting Va. Rep. Eric Cantor as possible vice presidential running mate

AP News

Aug 03, 2008 06:40 EST

John McCain's campaign has asked Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor for personal documents as the Republican presidential candidate steps up his search for a running mate, The Associated Press has learned.

Cantor, 45, the chief deputy minority whip in the House, has been mentioned among several Republicans as a possible running mate for McCain. A Republican familiar with the conversations between Cantor and the McCain campaign said Cantor has been asked to turn over documents, but did not know specifically what records were sought.

---snip---

Since his four terms in the Virginia House of Delegates starting in the early 1990s, Cantor has been part of the anti-tax wing of Virginia's Republican Party. His longtime advocacy for business and corporate interests in the General Assembly earned Cantor the derisive nickname "Overdog" from Democrats in Richmond.

3. Here's a pic and bio:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Cantor

Congress

During his first term in office, Cantor was selected to serve as Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. He has also served on the House Financial Services Committee and on the House International Relations Committee and the very powerful House Ways and Means Committee. Since his second term, he has served as chief deputy Republican whip, the highest appointed position in the Republican caucus.

Cantor is married to Diana Fine and they maintain a kosher home.<3> On June 8, 2005, Cantor defeated Jim Nachman, the Democratic nominee and Independent candidate Dr. Brad Blanton. Cantor received 64% of the votes.

Cantor is a supporter of strong US-Israel relations, cosponsoring legislation that would cut off all U.S. taxpayer aid to the Palestinian Authority and another bill calling for an end to taxpayer aid to the Palestinians until they stop unauthorized excavations on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.<4> Responding to a claim by the State Department that the United States provides no "direct" aid to the Palestinian Authority, Cantor stated that United States sends about $75 million in aid annually to the Palestinian Authority, which is administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development. Cantor also stated that Congress approved a three-year package of $400 million in aid for the Palestinian Authority in 2000.<5> Cantor's cousin, Daniel Cantor Wultz, died as the result of a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv which was carried out by Islamic Jihad on April 17, 2006.

In the 2002 election, Cantor defeated Democratic opponent Ben "Cooter" Jones, who starred on the popular TV series The Dukes of Hazzard. <6>

In June 2008, it was reported that Cantor was being considered as John McCain's Vice Presidential running mate<7>. <8>.

On August 3, 2008 it was reported that John McCain's campaign asked Congressman Cantor for personal papers, signifying McCain's interest in Cantor as a running mate.

5. That smile doesn't quite reach his eyes, does it?
Square of jaw, keen of eye and full of shit.

He's just the sort of "brash young up and comer" the GOP wants to cultivate for the future.

8. "Square of jaw, keen of eye and full of shit." You got it. I equate
Cantor to that red-headed little weasal Putnam in the House. Yes, this is the rethug future, and it ain't pretty.

11. seven years in the house of reps...
Edited on Sun Aug-03-08 12:51 PM by salin
doesn't that sort of counter the image/message McCain's folks are trying to make per "preparedness to lead" per a reason to vote for McCain?

Granted in this election the GOP has gone beyond perception management and has gone full frontal fantasy (as in claim anything, no fact standing in the way)...

Thanks for posting this info!

on edit - I thought i read he was elected in 2002 - I stand corrected it is seven years - still not much.

7. not quite...
Babylonsister's post above points out that he is Jewish. The white, conservative pro-business parts due seem to fit.

Can't imagine the GOP would run a no-name, at the top of a ticket.

15. Oy...
Gramps has to tap dance lightly here with his veep...far more than Obama does. He's not looking to pick up something with his pick, just to keep from alienating his thin base of support. He risks a lot with the wrong pick...like a Mittens who would piss off the Fundies. I wonder how his "base" would go along with a Jew on the ticket? Or a woman? He also has to find a choice who won't either embarass him or steal his "thunder".

Cheers...

:hi:

19. I don't think he will lose his base
the useful idiots on the radio and tv (faux, rushbo, etc.) will rallyaround McCain and keep the base intact. I think the - not embarass, or steal his thunder is key - I bet he also goes token - think: JC Watts (oh- that might hit embarass - all those outofwedlock kids), or Linda Chavez (oops all those fake fundraising orgs/schemes might also embarass)... I see your point ;-)

24. looks further to the right than Lieberman (I-con)
I found this:

http://www.tooprogressive.com/2008/06/19/eric-cantor-for-vp/

All I have to say to John McCain and the Republican party is please make this happen so I can watch Obama and the DNC have a field day as they easily roll over the McCain/Cantor ticket on November 4. Like McCain, Cantor has been in virtual lock-step with George Bush and also likes to tout his pretend foreign policy experience as if he’s actually ever done anything useful while serving in Washington. Not only that, but Cantor is also a known bff of the Cheney family and he even operates his own PAC, creatively (and hilariously) named “ERIC” or “Every Republican Is Crucial.” Seriously.

Read more after the jump including details on just who is behind the push to get Cantor on the ticket (HINT: K STREET)!!

More at link.

Looks like he never met a bush policy he didn't love.
