The profile of Vince Weiguang Li however, is starting to come out. The forty year old was in Edmonton, having arrived in Canada from China four years ago. People who knew Li, in Winnipeg where he used to live are reporting to the Winnipeg Free Press, "Yet those who got to know Vince Weiguang Li well soon recognized that beneath his friendly, polite exterior lurked something very troubling.

"He was kind of a lost soul. It was as if he was always looking for something," a member of a Winnipeg family which befriended Li -- even having him over for Christmas dinner two years ago -- told the Free Press Saturday in an exclusive interview". (Link to Winnipeg Free Press article)

The Free Press interview points to Li as a troubled individual, who refused, apparently to seek any form of treatment. "They say Li was clearly battling mental illness, but refused repeated offers to see a doctor and get help.

" 'I think, in their culture, (the issue of mental illness) is kind of frowned upon,' the woman said. She works in the mental health field and said it was obvious Li was struggling.

" 'He was definitely schizophrenic, probably paranoid schizophrenic,' she said. 'He needed help but he just wouldn't get it'."

4. It's especially difficult for paranoid schizophrenics as they fear every one
is out to get them. It then becomes a family responsibility to get help, but families are often challenged by the red tape involved. In the US if a person is not an immediate threat to themselves or others, you can't have them involuntarily committed. In fact, some advocacy groups suggest that families lie, as that is the only way to get help.

Yes this is very sad, all around.

5. At the same time - this IS this woman's diagnoses
And not a doctor's.

Perhaps his not wanting to get help because of the stigma can show some of the mentally ill ignorant people here calling for his death what the ultimate result of such thinking is....

7. True, although she is said to be in the mental health field.
In what capacity, I'm not sure.

8. He could also have no awareness that he was ill.
That all by itself is a good reason for people to educate themselves. We can be part of the suffering or we can try to be part of the solution.

6. If only he could have sought help a (by the accounts I've read) fine young man would still be alive.
