Tropical depression may form in Gulf of Mexico
Tropical depression may form in Gulf of Mexico

By Moming Zhou, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A storm system located in the northern Gulf of Mexico could develop into a tropical depression during the next day or so, the National Hurricane Center reported early Sunday.

The storm, located about 150 miles south of Pensacola, Fla., is expected to move slowly toward the west, the hurricane forecast center said. An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft was scheduled to investigate the area Sunday afternoon.

Tropical Storm Edouard forms off Louisiana coast

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Tropical Storm Edouard formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, and forecasters expected it to bring high winds and several inches of rain to the coasts of western Louisiana and eastern Texas.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center made Edouard, packing 45-mph winds, the fifth tropical storm of the 2008 hurricane season. They expected the storm to strengthen and said it could reach hurricane strength by the time it made landfall in Texas sometime Tuesday.

A tropical storm watch was in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Intercoastal City, La. That meant tropical storm conditions were expected in the next 24 hours. The warning area did not include New Orleans.

At 4 p.m. CDT, Edouard was located about 90 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and about 400 miles east of Galveston, Texas, and moving west about 6 mph.

5. Yup. I hadn't even thought of that. Living in TX, I've
been busy thinking about what we need to do if it heads this way.

only lost a fence during Rita, so I'm not all that worried. But for as long as I live, I won't forget those Katrina images. I will be prepared.

Edit to add: it has been stinkin' hot for over 10 days here. I knew something would be coming down the pike. We did get rain today, and that helped cool it down a bit, but I bet the gulf is bubbling with heat.

12. Will do. Will be filling up the gas tank for the outside cooker
just in case, and I'm going out tomorrow to buy more canned goods. I'm not too worried, but if we get deluged with rain, I don't want to have to go anywhere. And it surely can rain in Houston!

13. Good grief, is this the year that Texas gets beaten up repeatedly or something?
2004 was Florida... 2005 was the Central Gulf Coast... 2006 was El Nino, 2007 was Mexico... There are certainly seasonal patterns that set up; it seems that we are in one that encourages the tropical systems to mess with Texas.

Stay safe out there.

14. Here's to hoping...
...it doesn't gain much more strength but instead gives cloud cover and rain to the widest area possible. The next few days are supposed to have heat indices in the 110s so Edouard could help battle that.

picked up speed overnight from 6mph to 9mph, now 8mph. Hurricane hunters will be on Weather channel shortly. This one won't have time to be anything more than a Cat 1 at most. Watch the rain Louisiana and Texas.

Hurricane watches for Louisiana and Texas.
