Nancy Pelosi has drawn a line in the bloody sand, stating the goal is to have US troops out of Iraq no later than August 2008. A House aide said that Bush would not be able to waive or extend that deadline if the proposal becomes law. But Senate opposition could stop the legislation.

I guess this puts extra pressure on Lieberman, which is a good thing.

This decision comes at the same time the new commander in Iraq - Gen. Petraeus - stressed that military force alone is “not sufficient” to end the violence in Iraq and political talks must eventually include some militant groups now opposing the U.S.-backed government.

According to the AP, Petraeus called the situation "critical," in his first news conference since taking over command last month. He noted that such political negotiations “will determine in the long run the success of this effort.”

Is this finally the beginning of the end of Bush's illegal war?

Sorry about the flat, that stinks.

The bummer is that in the WC area, the KQKE signal gets overridden (or whatever you call it) by a sports station in Winnipeg. Once I get closer to the Bay and home, the local signal gets stronger.

10 and 9 years old respectively. And they adore one another. Now I can tell them if they act up, I'll replace the avatar with the other two - Tripod (3 legs, blind in one eye) and Furball (abandoned and adorable).

I think Tripod's my favorite. Nothing against your other kitties, I just love an underdog - um cat. How old are Tripod and Furball? Hugs to all of them!!! :hug:

We adopted Pod on our way back from Bubbling Well (pet cemetery - did you ever see "Gates of Heaven", a doc that Roger Ebert calls one of the 10 best films ever?). We'd taken our darling, beautiful, perfect calico Sam to be cremated (cancer - apparently injection-site induced), and stopped at a Well-Pet to pick up food for the remaining animals. They were sponsoring cat adoptions that day. There was a calico in a cage and we melted, but she wasn't very affectionate at first. The guy who worked there said "Look at this one - the most affectionate cat we have." He told us she'd been brought in by a family that found her in their yard with a compound leg fracture. They spent over $1000 rescuing the cat, but her leg had to be amputated. Her left eye was gouged and scarred over. We still don't know what happened to her. But the family already had five cats and they rejected her. The adoption agency, bless 'em, had a no kill policy, and we had to sign all kinds of forms that if it didn't work out, we'd return her. This was in 1994. So we figure she's at least 15. She still gets around OK, but we keep a special litter box for her upstairs, and she likes to sleep on my head!

Similarly, I found Furball at PetSmart. I'd gone in to get litter and they were having cat adoptions that day. (We'd had an adoptee who simply disappeared one day. We never let them outside, so I can only guess she sneaked out one day while I was doing laundry in the garage. Well, I combed the shelters and did all the lost cat stuff, to no avail.) So one day, years later, I went by to coo at the kitties and one of them kept talking to me. I looked in the kennel, saw she looked just like my missing kitty, and asked "Cleo"? She answered. The caretakers were so astonished they gave her to me (I gave them a donation). We don't think it's the same cat, but we love her just the same!!!

Don't know if you're familiar with the burb of Walnut Creek, but I always thought it was a Pub stronghold. Pretty affluent, after all. Anyway, during the 04 selection, there were protesters every week at a main intersection, and a Kerry/Edwards table smack in the middle of their "mini-Rodeo Drive". And even more surprising, the volunteers at the table were from Rossmoor, a very upscale retirement community. One of the women was the grandmother of the 12-year-old who spoke for "Kids for Kerry" at the convention.

sElection was stolen. No doubt in my mind.

Still, O'Liely attacking a place like Walnut Creek is a riot. Eating their own.

I'll be thinking about him. We're taking Skid to the vet tomorrow. He's lost some weight and he seems to be drinking a lot of water - I think he may be diabetic. His appetite is good and he seems ok other than that but we want to have him checked out to see what's going on.

Hopefully Skid handles the vet better than my kitty does. He's a Tasmanian devil at the vet. Literally the vet touched the carrier the last time and it bounced around like the cage that Taz was in during the cartoons...LOL.
