KFC in Fallujah story more Happy Iraq propaganda
Well whaddayaknow? FOX and Friends aired a false report last week (7/31/08) and almost got away with it. The report presented a Fallujah not only free from violence but embracing American culture, with a Kentucky Fried Chicken serving up hot-n-spicy wings to happy Iraqis.

Jelliott at TPM Muckraker's b.s. detector went off, and

"On Friday I put in a call to KFC headquarters to ask if the Fallujah chicken joint is the real deal. KFC told me they were looking into the matter. Today, Yum! Restaurants International spokesman Christophe Lecureuil wrote me back:

"I understand you wanted some details about the store in Falluja that looks like a KFC. This store is not approved by KFC International and we have working with the US Military to warn the troops of this situation."

Jelliott sourced the story back to Cpl. Chris T. Mann, Public Information Officer at Regimental Combat Team 1 at a Marine website.(7/16) SSgt Josh Higgins, Public Affairs Chief for the same Regimental Combat Team 1 echoed and amplified the myth in the Greenville Sun. (7/29) From there it traveled to FOX News' national platform, (7/31) with validation by guest Tommy Franks who said it "looks pretty good," and we've witnessed the evolution of a propaganda talking point.

FOX didn't bother to fact-check because they want to believe it and they want to tell their audience good news out of Iraq. "We report, you decide" doesn't really work if the reporting is wrong - unless the goal is to manipulate your decision, then it works beautifully.

1. *snort* "We report, you decide"
I noticed that. I don't know when they gave up "fair and balanced" but this is perfect for the idiots who watch them.

Faux News loves them a warm fuzzy!

7. They gave up "fair and balanced" after the Franken lawsuit fiasco.
When their case was tossed as being "wholly without merit".

Many thought THAT should have been their new motto, but alas, they went with "We report, you decide."

3. We love Fried Chicken in the ME... There is a KFC on almost every corner...
(not sarcasm)

Some enterprising Iraqi copied the logos and setup shop. Everyone knows KFC here, so no need for him to advertise... :)

6. I only know of two KFC's here, and neitehr is really convient LOL
One is in the city center of a town I work (on the out skirts) and the other is in Amsterdam. Easy to get to, but nearly 2 hours by train.

Still I go when I can, because the Dutch just have no idea how to make proper chicken ;)

9. The KFC I went to in Beijing had some interesting items
It was right outside our hotel and I went in on a late night break from work. The menu completely baffled me at first. They had congee and soups and some interesting "wraps". My wrap had chicken, onions and hoisin sauce (from what I could tell) and was excellent.

11. We have wraps, but not with chinese sauces... instead, we get lots of fire
i.e. spicy and peppery.

I am quite serious when I say there are more KFC's per square mile in the UAE than probably any place in the world... More outlets than Starbucks!!!

12. Mmmm that sounds nice!
I think the reason KFC here tastes better is by comparison lol.
That and it's a taste of home in a strange land :)
THAT... and the better food protection laws ;)
