Consider this yearly event at the Sturgis motorcycle rally:

Buffalo Chip has a reputation for that sort of thing. It holds a Miss Buffalo Chip contest every night, which is essentially a topless beauty pageant. And occasionally bottomless, too. During a drenching rain Wednesday night, the contest broke up into smaller groups and one woman wound up dancing naked on a bar top. Her boyfriend/husband saw her and angrily dragged her away as she struggled to put her pants back on and muttered something about how, "It's only this one week a year."

At this point you're probably asking yourself, what does this have to do with politics? Here's John McCain, speaking yesterday at the Sturgis motorcycle rally:

I was looking at the Sturgis schedule and noticed that you have a beauty pageant and so I encouraged Cindy to compete. I told her, with a little luck, she could be the only woman ever to serve as both the First Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.

It seems that John McCain really is willing to say or do anything to win.

I know what Sturgis is. I've seen stories about it and video of it. I've seen it on (not sure which ....) History or Discovery or TLC or whatever. I know it is for bikers and I know there's some debauchery and some stuff that's worse.

I know all that and would be cautious of any of their events.

But I have never ever heard of Miss Buffalo Chip. To be sure, to imagine it involving topless or bottomless or even public sex would not surprise me (nor would it offend me).

I can imagine that His Comboverness is more clueless about Miss Buffalo Chip than me. And I am damned clueless about it.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't know what the event was about, what its history is, nor about the allegations of spousal abuse that some say are also there.

I think he was just a clueless dumbfuck to have said this.

(and just because I see nothing worth exploiting as a slam on him in this particular event does not make me a defender of him)

He's not concerned at all about the accuracy or impact of his criticisms of our candidate. I don't believe there is any majority of voters who will tack to and adhere to our candidate just because they perceive our politics as more fair. I do believe there is value and need to expose McCain as the prevaricating opportunist that he's decided to campaign as in this election -- especially in the face of his mindless barrage of caricatures of Obama.

You cannot believe that a serious contender for the presidency would not have known about the event--or at least that his handlers wouldn't have informed him--before going there. ?

To be perfectly honest, when I saw this, the very first thing I flashed on is that **I** could have made the same sort mistake, left to my own devices. **Not** that I'd offer up Sparkly for that event, but that, running for office and seeing something locally popular but about which I know **nothing** and assuming something about it anyhow, make a completely inappropriate statement.

As to his handlers, many of them surely seem to be in the 'clueless' category, so there's no reason to think for sure that *they* knew better.

Buffalo Chip is a public campground. In the gangs campgrounds offering up their women is a mild description of what goes on.

McCain isn't a biker like the late Malcolm Forbes. He was just there pandering to an easy audience for a photo op. I also doubt he knew what he was saying when he made the comment. I also doubt he hung around to see how Miss Buffalo Chip earns her title.

I was dating her at the time they went to Sturgis to exhibit. The owner of the company had some friends in the Banditos. He made it clear to her that she was to stay in town after work and go back to the motorhome at night and no where else. He was so relieved when I went up to be with her for the weekend that he gave me a replica panhead to ride.

During that time I met a lot of pukes and heard a lot of stories. What always got me was that the women were more than willing. Almost like a badge of honor for them. I never did understand that mindset.

Among other singular honors.

I have a couple of women biker (Bandito spouses no less) friends who do this, it provides a level of protection in a hypermasculinzed culture. I wouldn't call these women weak by any means even if those vests disgust me. They choose to be a part of a culture that has it's roots in a cowboy type outlawry. As a woman in that culture you have to win respect, You don't automatically get it, and I think there are women who don't understand this, not even a little bit. Once respect is there, it tends to be real as much as I hate to admit it.

From my feminist perscective, there is a certain level of sexual honesty in biker culture, that is missing from your average Amercian. They don't pretend to be anything but what they are.

Sturgis is just a big commercial drunken party that middle aged and middle class neo-bikers love to brag about going to. Too bad really, it used to be a good time.

...and I have always struggled with how I feel about the "property of (insert 1% club name)" cuts I see the women wearing. After thinking about it for years, I guess it's none of my business, I'm not a club member so I'll leave it up to them as to how they handle their affairs.

One thing you hit on that is for certain, the level of protection the women have is pretty unique. When you see "prpoerty of" Bandidos, Outlaws, Mongols etc in these parts, you know that means "you can look but don't touch." Breaking those rules can bring a world of shit down on a person that they are not even prepared for.

But, those groups only represent roughly 1% of the biker community at large. A lot of us may look the same to the casual observer behind our black leather, but there is a pretty diverse world underneath once you get beyond the surface.

I was "in" and therefore immune from most of that "world of shit" you speak of. I did see it though. As I said it was an interesting insight into that world.

I ride too. Not Harleys but I don't discriminate about brands. Just if you're a shithead about it like I judge everyone else. :)

I have some 1%er friends and I've gotten a glimpse into their world. I can see where some might be attracted to it, but it's never been for me. I never have been good at following along with a group, I guess I have too much of an individualist mindset,lol.

I never thought being a biker was about the patch set you have on your back, or not. It's about the love of bikes and love of riding.

It's incredibly refreshing. Just being the devoted to Allah followers they are.

But I cannot conceive of any husband (or father or wife or anyone) standing on a stage and presenting such an offer of ANOTHER HUMAN BEING as some participant in what amounts to formalized flesh-peddling.
