Who is he to lecture the Chinese on Human rights? Gitmo, George?

It is a shame that this great event will be marred by the grandstanding of people like ****.

His last hurrah will be a sad event, did he have to show up so he could lecture the world on their shortcomings? Is there not enough at home that should be addressed?

No wonder we are so ill thought of by others. This Olympic event has become a showcase for propaganda, I am embarrassed that he and his minions are there. I don't even want to think about the millions of dollars he is wasting shipping the convoy of SUV's, Secret Service, press, advisor's etc, that will accompany him..

Perhaps it is just me who feels this way, I don't know. Just call me an old cynic. I don't want to hear any more about his trip to the area, unless the coverage highlights his stupidity. Then it might be fun to watch. After my initial disgust, I might get a chuckle out of his gaffe's.

3. I read he is the first President to attend the Olympics in a foreign country.
He is sooooooooo into seeing the Olympics, he will shout out his support for China's repressive regime and all their human rights abuses. The fact that he is given some tempered response from Thailand is worthless. He should be home screaming about abuses. He would have attending Berlin in 1936 given the opportunity.

4. Yeah, there's been enough pot calling the kettle black moments
that I think he doesn't even care that he's being a hypocrite. Also, he still has plausible deniability in that he has stooges that he blamed those scandals on. Although, all the revelations coming out are getting harder and harder for him to just ignore, I think. Here though, I think all that he's going to do is just going to screw the US over and that's pissing China off. With how much of our national debt they actually own and the fact that they can artificially control their currency price and with the degree to which that now affects our economy, China has a lot they can do. Plus, they are practically Bush-like in choosing to ignore whatever treaties or rules they want to ignore to do what they want to do.

Actually, from what I know of the political situation though, the Olympics has already become an opportunity for propaganda but for the PRC to try to show off the progress they've made. It's also become a showcase of the inferiority complex that developed from the wounds that China's still nursing from its days as an all-but-in-name-only colony of foreign powers. It'll be a scary display of the high degree of nationalism/patriotism encouraged in their citizenry.

And yeah, I agree that from all signs of it, this is NOT going to be a fun Olympics to watch. It's probably going to be all sorts of drama going on, whether we know it or not. Frankly though, I'm surprised at how little protest the dictatorial controls the Chinese have instituted is getting from the international community on the government level. There has been some comments about some of their actions so far but not nearly enough. I don't know, I thought that for China to hold the Olympics in Beijin, they were supposed to avoid doing stuff like making everyone who goes to China for the Olympics sign waivers stating that they consent to possible 24/7 surveillance or their random and weird rules to be enforced like banning blacks from bars and no spitting on the sidewalks. Let's not forget the indignation they show whenever they're questioned or given suggestions on how to make things go better.

5. Nobody's Paying Attention To Him
Honestly, I think him going makes this country safer...better to have him over there than having to deal with him here.

Few mention the long booooosh ties to China. Poppy was the first US attache (before diplomatic relations) and I'm sure the Carlyle Group has its dirty hands all over Chinese sweatshops and in paying off the Beijing regime. This wasn't a diplomatic trip, this was a business one.
