Why Isn't McCain doing better?
Lets reverse the pundits favorite question "Why isn't Obama doing better?" to "Why isn't McCain doing better" after all:

1) The pundits have made it cler that McCain is a true American hero
2) He's real maverick constantly going up against his party and his president.
3) He's a "straight talker" who never avoids tough questions.
4) He's served his country in the service and public office practically all his life
5) People know him--they are still trying to understand who this guy with the funny name is.
6) His 2000 campaign brought him the esteem and admiration of millions.

Why isn't McCain doing better? Why is he languishing around 39-41 percent against a guy nobody knew four years ago?

3. After 7.5 years of Bush/Cheney abuse, I don't think there's a human alive
that could run on the GOP ticket and receive an overwhelming reception.

Americans of all parties, races, sexes, religions, and stature are weary of the Republican brand right now. It's poison.

5. He made a strategic campaign blunder
Whether the blunder ultimatly costs him the WH is yet to be seen, but it's not looking good right now.

He made his name as a "Maverick." How much truth there is to this is unknown, but he'd been known for working across the aisle (McCain-Feingold), being friends with fellow 'Nam vet John Kerry, and having made peace, individually, with several anti-Vietnam activists. Simply put, he was different.

But his campaign is not predicated on difference... he is the same... he is in lock step with conservatives on taxes, the war, oil drilling, etc. He's flip-flopped on "harsh interroation." He's blundered by trading his maverick image for that of being the carbon copy of a President with a 28% approval rating.
