Mayor's home raided in pot-smuggling probe - Identity theft gone wrong??
Mayor's home raided in pot-smuggling probe

Published: Aug. 7, 2008 at 10:05 AM
UPPER MARLBORO, Md., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Police say they have arrested three men in a smuggling scheme that included shipping a 32-pound package of marijuana to a Washington, D.C.-area mayor's wife.

A SWAT team and county narcotics officers raided the home of Berwyn Heights, Md., Mayor Cheye Calvo and wife Trinity Tomsic July 29 after intercepting the package, which was addressed to her. During the raid, officers fatally shot the family's two black Labrador retrievers, police said. Calvo's attorney Timothy Maloney said officers also tied up the mayor and his mother-in-law.

Police Chief Melvin High and Sheriff Michael Jackson told the Washington Post the raid was conducted responsibly, given what police knew at the time. High added that Tomsic was "most likely" an unsuspecting recipient, "but we don't want to draw that definite conclusion at the moment."

Calvo insisted he and his family were innocent. Maloney said the arrests confirmed Tomsic was a "random victim of identity theft at the hands of major drug traffickers."

4. No virus found from here.
You may, however, have some kind of spyware or malware that is giving false positives in an attempt to get you to buy antivirus software.

3. Police Chief Melvin High and Sheriff Michael Jackson???
You just can't make this stuff up.

If cops came into my house and shot my dog, I would be arrested for assault and battery over and over and over again. Cops on power trips suck.

9. It Was Announced
this morning that the Mayor, his wife and mother-in-law are believed to be innocent of all charges. This is believed to be a new method used by drug dealers. Have the drugs delivered to an innocent third party. The contract delivery person calls the dealers when he drops the packages off and they are suppose to be picked up before the third party sees them. In this case, the wife was home and the mother-in-law spotted the cops around the house as being suspicious persons. The cops then went in.

My beef is with the police methods from that point on. Knowing Prince Georges County, Maryland it won't happen but I feel some cops asses need to be ground.

19. A spokewoman for the county (I think) was offered to provide the other opinion
and, boy, was she as bad as anyone from the Bush White House.

Evading, never admitting a mistake, except that "we have problems with drugs" and saying that there is no such thing as "no knock warrant," repeated it several times whenever was asked again.

Those poor innocent dogs. They were labs, not pit bulls.
How threatened are you going to be by a lab? By the way one dog was said to have been running away, and SWAT supposedly chased him down and killed him.

8. I know. This is really what stayed in my mind after CNN reported the story
this morning.

I think that the "no knock" policy has to be changed, depending on whether you are in gang territory with known drug dealers, or going to what there are no previous criminal records.

12. According to this article, the police didn't have a no knocking
warrant. All they had is a standard warrant, so they should have knocked on the door and introduced themselves. Killing those poor dogs like that? Nothing will bring them back.

They shot the dogs and tied up the mother? Over a bag of pot?

Who are the real criminals here?

Hopefully the law suit will be massive.

15. I would like to see this happen to every pro drug war politician in the US
I'd be willing to wager the mayor in question supports (or supported, anyway) the drug war.

Until the chickens come home to roost like Passenger Pigeons, in such numbers they break the tree branches from their weight, the drug war will never end.

And it's a damn shame what happened to the dogs, they didn't deserve their fate, the mayor I suspect did.

How do you know what this mayor supported or not? The guy is most likely an innocent victim of an identity fraud.
The poor dogs are dead and nothing will bring them back.

17. Given the fact that 99 percent of the politicians in America support the drug war..
I stand behind what I said.

Show me the politicians, Dem or Rep, that do not support the drug war. Hen's teeth are abundant in comparison.

Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 08:44 PM by lizzy
get into your house, and shoot your dogs, when apparently the police didn't have the "no knock warrant." And especially if it's true that the dog was running away, what kind of person kills the dog that is trying to run away?

20. Actually, no it's not..
Supporting the one leads inexorably to the other..

It's just that *this* time, it happened to the right person. Usually it's some poor (and usually dark skinned) person with no political clout whatsoever.

The only reason this incident made the news is because it happened to a politician, if it had happened to John Q Public it would have been totally unremarkable because it is common as dirt.

Kicking in doors, tying people up and killing pets is what drug warriors _do_, you support the drug war and you support the drug warriors.
