One too many stupid, BS repeating of the right wing lies in my
local paper. I have to respond.
Please comment on my LTTE before I send it.
Thanks!

I am continually amazed by the stupid lies people will happily believe. It does not matter that it would only take one click on your computer or taking the time to listen to the whole quote, speech or story. No it is so much more fun to just believe the lies. Maybe we could try a little truth for a change.

Sen. Obama did visit the troops when he was in the Middle East on the Congressional visit, but when he was in Europe with his campaign staff the military suggested that it might not be appropriate to visit the troops. Oh, did you know that the McCain campaign had two ads prepare to attack Obama? One attack ad if he visited our troops in Germany and one if he did not.

Sen. Obama, while giving a speech about his very detailed energy plan, was asked what we could do personally to lower our consumption. He replied that we could, among other things, keep our cars tuned up and our tires inflated. Good idea that has been suggested by AAA, H.W. Bush, and NASCAR to name a few. But the McCain campaign had to laugh and state that the Obama energy plan was to inflate our tires, they even gave out cute little tire gages. How sweet! After McCain told everyone that they should wear sun block every day should the Obama campaign started handing out tubes of sun block and tell everyone that McCain’s health care policy was to wear sun block?

If you disagree with Obama’s plan to work with the government in Iraq to get our troops out in 16 months. Or you don’t want to see a big changes in our countries health care. Or you don’t support his real energy policies after you actually know what his plans are. Or you are happy with where our country is currently heading. I can respect that, but can we try being honest for a change.

If you hear a story about either candidate, please do a little research before you buy it hook, line and sinker. If you get an attack email about a candidate, go to Snopes.com and make sure it’s true before you pass it on.

We have a lot of problems and serious issues to deal with in the election. Let’s deal with the issues and drop the smears.

1. I like thrust of the letter - I see a grammar problem.

Your 4th paragraph:

If you disagree with Obama’s plan to work with the government in Iraq to get our troops out in 16 months. Or you don’t want to see a big changes in our countries health care. Or you don’t support his real energy policies after you actually know what his plans are. Or you are happy with where our country is currently heading. I can respect that, but can we try being honest for a change.

I think that only the final sentence in that paragraph is actually a sentence. You could make the entire paragraph one long sentence; or complete the thought that is being expressed in each of the previous sentences.

You might soften the phrase "stupid lies". It may turn off some people who would otherwise agree with you.

3. Nicely done.
A few nitpicky suggestions--

Question mark instead of period at end of 2nd para.
Para 3-- maybe "the elder George Bush," not "H.W. Bush." Also maybe "absurdly claim" instead of "state" and semicolon after "tires." "Gauges," not "gages." Comma after "every day," and "have" after "campaign." "Telling," not "tell."

Commas instead of periods after "if" clauses in the 4th para, and "if" after each "or." "Country's," not "countries." End the para with a "?"

Pardon my obsession with punctuation etc. Overall, it is a very strong and useful letter. I especially liked your plug for Snopes.

4. I appreciate you "obsession with punctuation". That is what I need.

6. One thing I would recommend is to avoid appear overly emotional.

It makes it too easy to discount you as angry or bitter and the reason for a letter to the editor is to hopefully persuade people to your point.

Proposed Edits:
(Original, Edited, Comments)

  • It does not matter that it would only take one click on your computer or a few minutes taking the of your time to listen to the whole quote, speech or story.
  • Sen. Obama did visit the troops when he was in the Middle East on the his Congressional visit but when he was in Europe with his campaign staff, the military suggested that it might not be appropriate to visit the troops.
  • But the McCain campaign had to laugh and state that the Obama energy plan was to inflate our tires,; they even gave out cute little tire gauges.
  • After McCain told everyone that they should wear sunblock everyday, should the Obama campaign started handing out tubes of sunblock and telling everyone that McCain’s health care policy was to wear sunblock?
  • If you disagree with Obama’s plan to work with the government in Iraq to get our troops out in 16 months. O or you don’t want to see a big changes in our countries country's health care. O or you don’t support his real energy policies after you actually know what his plans are. O or if you are happy with where our country is currently heading, I can respect that but can we try being honest for a change. This entire paragraph is really a bunch of fragmented clauses that would probably read better if it was all one big sentence, which is a bit untidy but grammatically correct.

    Hope this helps.

EDIT: Oops, I'm slower in my typing. It looks like most of my comments are a moot point.

8. That's because you took extra time for corrections I missed.
;-) Like you, I also try not to get in the way of someone else's run-on sentence, particularly when written in a conversational tone.
