Capitol Hill Questions FBI Anthrax Investigation: Where's The Polygraph?
Capitol Hill Questions FBI Anthrax Investigation: Where's The Polygraph?
By Andrew Tilghman - August 8, 2008, 9:19AM

Concerns about the FBI's circumstantial case against military microbiologist Bruce Ivins are reaching Capitol Hill.

Last night, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) sent a three-page letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey and FBI Director Robert Mueller III, asking them to respond to 18 questions about virtually every aspect of the probe.

In the House, Rep. Rush Holt, a Democrat who represents the New Jersey district where the anthrax-laced letters were mailed, says he's talking to other House members about a combined inquiry involving the judiciary, intelligence, science and technology, and government oversight committees.

Grassley has some pretty good questions. For example:

Was Dr. Ivins ever polygraphed in the course of the investigation? If so, please provide the dates and results of the exam(s). If not, please explain why not.

And

What role did the FBI play in conducting and updating the background examination of Dr. Ivins in order for him to have clearance and work with deadly pathogens at Ft. Detrick?

2. They should ask whether samples of RMR 1029 were ever given to Bush, Cheney or anyone in the WH

The FBI is quiet as to whether there was a match or not though.

7. Heard this from WaPo investigative reporter on Diane Rehm Show.
If they're quiet about a match, it didn't match. He's dead.

6. They said it appeared he made an effort to disguise his handwriting ...
... which suggests no handwriting expert could make a case that Ivins wrote the notes.

10. So how many years was he disguising his handwriting-the entire time
he was in their employ? That sounds pretty farfetched to me.

4. To me, it sounds like
Hatfill could have done it, got paid 5+million from the government for his time and effort in a 'legal' payoff, and Dr. Ivins was the fall guy. Sounds like Congress may be thinking that too.

9. Sounds like
The FBI don't know sh*t from shinola. Last night the news reported that the FBI removed two computers reportedly used by Dr. Ivins from a Frederick Maryland public library.

I think Hatfill was as much of a scapegoat as Dr. Ivins was becoming, only Hatfill was made of sterner stuff and was able to finally beat the FBI, where as Dr. Ivins wasn't that tough and couldn't deal with the pressure.

8. Here's the question I'd like to hear them ask.
We know that the mailed samples are genetically similar but not physically similar to the samples Ivins was working on. How do they compare to the anthrax weapons in US Military stockpiles both physically and genetically?
