FBI Director Mueller regarding the probe of Dr. Hatfill: "I am unapologetic"

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080808/NEWS02/808080312

<snip>

Mueller said criticism that the FBI had fumbled the anthrax investigation in 2002 when news reports surfaced identifying Stephen Hatfill, another Army weapons scientist, as a suspect in the case. The FBI recently paid Hatfill $4.6 million to settle a case Hatfill had filed against it, alleging his reputation had been destroyed.

"I am unapologetic," Mueller said of the probe of Hatfill. "I think it is erroneous to say that there were mistakes ... The reason for the settlement in that particular case was attributable to leaks that occurred in the course of the investigation. Those leaks should not have occurred."

Hatfill accused the FBI of conducting public and constant surveillance of him, including "bumper locking" him in Georgetown, and running over his foot while following him. He also accused several high-level DOJ officials of giving the media advanced notice of search warrants of his residence in Frederick, MD. Further his complaint alleged that he knew he was being wiretapped in his own home.

1. Unlike Ivins....
...Hatfill reportedly came out of the Selous Scouts during Zimbabwe's bloody war. (This may be doubtful since he also claimed to be an "ex-Special Forces captain"). Regardless, of whether his claims are true or not, Hatfill was much tougher than Ivins and didn't crack, which is why he was never charged.

2. So the leaks were not mistakes -- intended, maybe illegal, but not mistakes
And when the American taxpayers have to by nearly $5mill because of these disclosures, none of us should expect an apology of any kind.

4. Ruining A Man's Reputation And Wasting Millions Of Taxpayer
dollars not worth an apology? What does it take for these guys to admit they screwed up? What happened to the "personal responsibility" repugs were so fond of citing?

5. Leaks, my ass.
When you stand in a hotel hallway videotaping your subject as he comes to a job interview, you are not trying to be covert.

This was purely an application of pressure to make someone collapse from the strain. That person becomes your perpetrator. Yay! Case closed!

7. I see it as a plan to get the tax payers to pay off the perpetrator.
All that is necessary is to have some one in the DOJ to leak information to the press and then let the DOJ settle out of court for the payoff money.
Hatfield "clears his name" and gets the big payday and the patsy is harassed until hi supposedly kills himself
Case closed....mission accomplished
