This SUCKS! What happened to majority rules? And union rules?

Tyson plant caves to right-wing bloggers.»

Recently, Tyson Foods said it would drop Labor Day as a paid vacation day and substitute the Muslim holiday Eid as part of a new five-year contract, in order to accommodate Muslim workers. In response, right-wing bloggers were enraged. Mark Krikorian of the National Review, for example, called it a “war on Labor Day.” Today, the company backtracked:

{M}any antiimmigrant groups and right-wing bloggers called for a boycott of Tyson, saying the contract betrayed an important American holiday and was an improper concession to Islam.

In a news release on Friday, Tyson said it had asked the union to revise the plant’s contract and restore Labor Day as a paid holiday because some Shelbyville employees had expressed concern about the contract’s provisions.

The revised contract again makes Labor Day a paid holiday but also keeps Id al-Fitr (pronounced eed-al-FIT-tr) — which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting — as a paid holiday for those who want it.

Malkin took credit for the change in policy on her blog today.

2. What's the problem?
The workers get both days off instead of just one. It's a great outcome.

6. I think the problem is that Tyson made a decision effecting...
...participating parties based on influence from a party not involved.

That's why Tyson is/are cowards.

3. Regardless of who forced them into it . . .
Dropping Labor Day was a bad idea -- it's a national holiday, after all. The accommodation they've reached now, with Eid al-Fitr being paid for those who wish to take it (presumably based on some salary sacrifice spread across the year) makes sense and shows an awareness of what appears to be a special demographic of their workforce.

Far be it from me to defend Tyson, with which I have issues, but I think the offer now is more appropriate.

they probably got more than just crazy right wingers angry over that...

bad move trying to get rid of labor day...

but hey, if they get to have both thats a win win situation one would tend to think?

now if they still denied the muslim holiday, thatd be a different story...

looks like they tried to make everyone happy ?

but hey, be sure to thank malkin for saving our SOCIALIST HOLIDAY!

thank u comrad malkin

5. I like it
"Well, I guess I can go to work today and get paid or.... stay at home and get paid. My choice."

They'd just as well shut down both days. }( }(

8. why not have both?
I've worked for companies that had a "personal day" so people could take off religious holidays. Why not go for that in addition to Labor Day?

11. like rightwingers would want people to have a paid day off,
who is smokin crack on this issue. Did they also boycott Agriprocessors because they used illegal, underage workers on the slaughter house floor without any training?

RWDSU Secures Both Labor Day and Eid Al-Fitr as Recognized Paid Holidays For Tyson Foods Workers (8/8/08)

Shelbyville, TN, August 8, 2008 -- The Retail, Wholesale and
Department Store Union (RWDSU) and Tyson Foods have reached an
agreement to increase the number of paid days off for workers in the
current calendar year to include Labor Day and the Muslim observance
Eid al-Fitr as paid holidays for workers in the Shelbyville poultry
processing plant. The agreement amends the existing contract
negotiated last year.

Beginning in calendar year 2009, a worker who does not observe Eid
al-Fitr will have the option of selecting another day as a paid
Personal Day at their discretion. The amended contract will be
extended throughout the life of the current labor agreement and will
recognize the following eight (8) paid holidays:

New Year's Day (January 1)

Martin Luther King's Birthday (as designated)

Memorial Day (as designated)

Independence Day (July 4th)

Labor Day (as designated)

Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November)

Christmas Day (December 25th)

EID AL-FITR OR PERSONAL HOLIDAY (UPON EMPLOYEE\'S REQUEST)

Members of the RWDSU overwhelmingly approved the new agreement on a
vote held Thursday, August 7.

"The union is pleased that the will of the workers in Shelbyville to
observe and celebrate Eid al-Fitr will be guaranteed as a paid
holiday," said Stuart Appelbaum, national president of the RWDSU.
"The RWDSU believes that this is an important sign of respect of
deeply held religious beliefs. This Labor Day, the workers at
Shelbyville have more reason that ever to be proud of being part of a
union."

There's no way they could resist the lure of cheap chicken-like parts.

14. Malkin's just a creepy little twit
But I can live with the revision - so long as their Muslim employees get the day as a paid holiday.

In fact, in a way it sort of calls the bigots on their insistence on having Labor Day off. So they get it off. And their Muslim co-workers get their holiday off, too.
