American tourist stabbed to death in Beijing, attacker killed after leap from building (DAMN)
American Tourist Is Reported Killed in Beijing
Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) -- Team officials and state media say a knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing.

One of the victims was killed and one was injured in the attck on the first day of the Olympics Saturday.

The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower three miles from the main Olympics site.

The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

2. OMFG, this is messed up.
I am also pissed because as an Asian, this story coupled with the Winnipeg bus killer will just give the racists that much more ammo to be fucking assholes.

6. LOL
If you think the US hegemonic war machine and its domestic apparatus will not make a big deal of this, think again.

Just wait til Lou Dobbs wakes up and gets a chance to point cameras at his piehole.

8. Uh, Dobbs is against the war and is definitely not part of the "domestic apparatus"
Lou Dobbs has the full weight of the US Chamber of Commerce after him for his opposition to offshoring of American jobs.

15. Trying to put words in other people's mouths?
I wrote that Dobbs is against the war; I didn't say anything about his former views concerning the war.

7. I first saw this report on the crawl at the bottom of the ESPN morning broadcast.
Axiom: if ESPN is reporting it, it's already everywhere.

9. Being an American in a foreign land used to be a pride for Americans, and it used to bring a lot of
respect for American citizens. Now, it is a f..ing risky to claim to be American in a foreign land. How are Americans, then, going to make business around the world? How are Americans going to visit places around the world ? It is really disheartening for such a resourceful and kind people to be a prisoner of governmentpolicy.

10. This is why Obama being so well-liked internationally should be a plus.
Why shouldn't it be cool to be able to proudly say, "I'm an American" abroad and be congratulated for having a kickass President? We are literally being ENVIED for having a political system capable of producing great people like Obama and Hillary! Do you know how long it's been since we've been envied by Europe? FAR TOO LONG!

13. Well, no...
"Seibel said the two Americans who were attacked were not wearing anything that would have identified them as Americans or part of the U.S. team. He could not name the coach.

"They were not wearing apparel or anything that would have specifically identified them as being members of our delegation" or as Americans, he told The Associated Press."
