My political and social philosophy is one of radical principles and pragmatic action. Lately I have become more sensitive to a disconcerting tendency among radical thinkers toward rigidity and absolutism.

Quite simply, I recognize all of the same problems yet strongly disagree with the notion that all will be put right when a sudden popular revolution arrives. Thus, while I agree with many of my radical friends about the profound problems of our society, it's ludicrous to think that supporting a radical third party candidate for President of the United States in a general election is anything other than ridiculous.

I have been called all sorts of names by leftist friends because I support the Democratic Party nominee for President in 2008. I am accused of being an enabler, which sounds suspiciously close to being called a "collaborator." I am recommended to read an endless stream of opinion essays enumerating all the grave problems in our political system that I am already well aware of.

What is overlooked when people criticize those who support the Democratic nominee in 2008 as opposed to a more progressive/radical alternative candidate is that change never happens from the top down. Real social change movements always begin from the bottom up.
