Bush, in Beijing, Says No State Should Fear Religion (Update2)

Aug. 10 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush worshiped at a Chinese church in Beijing today and then pressed Chinese President Hu Jintao to allow more religious freedom.
``Laura and I just had the great joy and privilege of worshiping here in Beijing,'' Bush said outside the Kuanjie church after attending the services this morning. ``You know, it just goes to show that God is universal, and God is love, and no state, man or woman should fear the influence of loving religion.''
Later in the day, Bush urged Hu to make it easier for people in China to worship freely, telling him that China will be ``a better place if there's more freedom of religion,'' according to an account of the meeting by White House National Security Council Asia director Dennis Wilder.
The comments mark the fourth time in as many days that Bush, who is in Beijing to attend the Olympic Games, has urged China to ease restrictions on religion. Yesterday, he used his weekly radio address to say that the world's most-populous country should not view religious freedom as a threat.
``I had a very uplifting experience by going to a church,'' Bush said at the beginning the scheduled 30-minute meeting with Hu. ``I feel very strongly about religion, and I am so appreciative of the chance to go to church in your society.'' ......(more)
