The true meaning of the Olympics in one picture...
Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 02:12 AM by ColbertWatcher

The silver and bronze medalists for the 10m air pistol women's final pose for pictures on the podium in the Beijing Shooting Range Hall, Beijing, China, 10 August, 2008.

From left:
Natalia Paderina of Russia
Nino Salukvadze of Georgia

(Not pictured: gold medalist Guo Wenjun of China)

In case the meaning is too subtle for some folks: one woman is from Russia, the other from Georgia and they are celebrating peacefully even as their "respective" governments shoot to kill people back home.

might put things in perspective for those who want war, and the innocents caught in between.

...how their "leaders" are behaving was worth noting.

12. I thought of that too...
...about what their governments will do with these "sharpshooters" once they get home.

But, I'd rather just appreciate this one brief, fleeting moment.

19. that is nice, thank you. I just composed/deleted a poll
about the Olympics, if watching made you feel nationalistic, patriotic, or in awe, but deleted it since I don't feel like arguing about it. I am tired of the Olympics being portrayed as "us vs them" and really appreciate photos and posts like this. Thank you.

22. You're welcome.
I posted a few Olympic polls (check out my journal) and I've found that the most successful ones give people the opportunity to critique NBC's coverage.

So, you can still do an "us vs them" poll, just twist it a little:

"Us" = people who enjoy the athlete's accomplishments

vs

"Them" = the corporate assholes who do their level best to ruin it for everyone.

www.nbcolympics.com (it's a pretty cool website, I must say).....BUT, I couldn't stream a European website version (b/c they couldn't verify that I was in Europe).

25. Hmmm. How about the 4x100 freestyle relay picture of the medal ceremony?
The US was THE ONLY one of the three that had a person of color.

Air pistols from 33 feet? Surely captures the meaning of the olympics, doesn't it? Russian and Georgian women who use pistols well = THE TRUE MEANING OF THE OLYMPICS.

29. But you DO have a point. And it's well taken.
The human drama of athletic endeavor is very interesting to me. I have a personal friend who was robbed of her chance at two gold medals in women's volleyball when President Carter decided to make the games political in 80.

As far as politics go, we ARE on the same team.

I just think there are other ways to punish a country for their abysmal human rights record without punishing people who aren't involved.

37. They are both "Russian"..
The USSR broke apart, but the local people never lost their affinity for what they grew up being... That , in fact is what a lot of the "trouble" is all about..

They have a situation similar to Kashmir/Pakistan/Bangladesh/Inda..

People in charge drew lines on a map, and created new countries & autonomous regions (like Kosovo) and the people who actually lived there, and whose families had lived there for centuries, did not want to be part of the "new country"...but they also could not afford, or did not feel like they should HAVE to physically move..

The new country's leaders thought they could force those "rebellious" areas to conform..and now we are where we are..

39. That is a beautiful picture.
Congratulations Natalia Paderina and Nino Salukvadze.

I wish we got to see wonderful moments like this in the MSM more often. This is what life is about - celebrating and forgetting differences. Unfortunately, such moments usually go undocumented and unreported.
