Unless NATO acts to defend Georgia, no more former satellites will ask to join
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=27975

<snip>Moscow’s invasion and its cozy ties to Georgia’s secessionist regions may scuttle any NATO membership chances for Tbilisi. Keeping Georgia in a constant state of conflict is intended to show Washington and Brussels that the small republic is too unstable for membership and to force Tbilisi back under the Kremlin’s heel. Unless NATO acts to defend Georgia, no more former satellites will ask to join.

On Friday, President Saakashvili called on the US to live up to its principles and defend Georgia’s democracy. So far, the US has only sent a diplomat to Tiblisi, and savvy observers ought to ask why the US didn’t share with the Georgians the intelligence it must have had about the Russian buildup and Moscow’s intentions.

1. Kinda like the 'Monroe Doctrine'

The mere presence of such a large and powerful country automatically draws the smaller satellites into it's orbit ...

It needn't be averred, but it is a reality .... NATO is NOT going to intervene on Russia's doorstep ...

2. That May be True
and it may be a good thing.

Poland was a satellite. Georgia was part of the territory of the Soviet Union. The current war is a predictable reaction against NATO reaching into parts of the Soviet Union itself.

3. And Russia may be using a nuke threat to keep us from aiding Georgia...

4. NATO is pointless and must be dissolved.
NATO is a "America: Defend Western Europe!" pact, and nothing more. There is no pretense of partnership or reciprocity. It is an old-fashioned luxury we cannot afford.
