Boy, 11, Arrested In Drug Store Robbery

Fake Guns Used During Holdup

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An 11-year-old boy was arrested Monday morning, accused by police of trying to rob a Walgreens drug store.

The boy entered the store at Kirkman Road and Raleigh Street around 3:30 a.m. with fake guns and tried to rob an employee and the store manager, Orlando Police Department Lt. A. Skiles said.

Someone in the store was able to dial 911, and officers were waiting for the boy when he fled.

The boy tried to get away on a bike with money in hand, but Skiles said officers quickly caught up with him in the parking lot.

Customers were troubled by the incident.

"It's a shame. He is 11 years old. That is a very young and tender age. This could be something that potentially changes him for good," Elizabeth Pena said.

Some customers said they feared that surveillance video from a rash of recent drugstore robberies that show men with guns motivated the boy.

Walgreens officials said in June they planned to beef up security at their stores.
