The world lost a bit of soul, funk, fun, truth, dignity, laughter, art, quality, power, vision, authenticity and history with Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac.

Bernie Mac grew up in that youth we did -- different worlds: him moving from public housing hallways where his mother carried him, kicking rats off her feet and us, in a middle class neighborhood with an integrated school, kids funkin' out on a sunny front porch.

Bound together by events, by images and news that wasn't CENSORED as it is now, journalists whose professional code was fair and balanced, not "Fair and Balanced" TM. Bound together by assassinations, space flights, war, "unrest," music, music, music, music.

Soul.


Bernie Mac told a story about being little and seeing his mother cry. Bill Cosby came on the TV and started talking about rats in the house and "she started to laugh and cry at the same time." That became what he wanted to do, to "relieve my mother's pain." "Richard Pryor taught me how to laugh at yourself, how to laugh at your own pain."

There was a lot of pain, there was a lot of hope, there was something in the air, (some of it was dope), There was something like reality on the news and in the arts. Something like reality in our views and in our hearts.

Then the megamediaconsolidation began at the end of the Seventies. Youth culture was assassinated, media was consolidated, the culture was AmericanIdolated. (How dya like your Trickle Down Morning In America now, Reagan Democrats?)

Another result of megamediaconsolidation? Bernie tells it:

"I watched those great comics to see what made each of them great. It was they each had their own unique style. Nowadays, a comic come along, he got some success, that's what they want everybody else to be like."

That's right! FORMULA!! Forget imagination! Forget authenticity!! Don't challenge audiences with stuff that's NEW and startle them with the UNKNOWN! Just make 'em pay big(ger) bucks for stuff that's already sold well! Fuhgeddaboudit.

Bernie Mac's last hurrah will be being dissed by the Obama campaign for being "inappropriate." Obama has to be the kind of (innocuous) candidate he is to get as far as he has, even 40 years after MLK. The evolution will not be televised.


So, Omega Mac apologizes for berating those youngins who've been denied by corporate America their birthright to shock and amaze older generations with art that has never been seen before.

Omega Mac apologizes to all the old hippie/yuppie Boomers who were so proud of waking up after their 30 year nap, trying to get an explanation for WHY THE FUCK DID YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?


If you get soul, it never lets you go. If you never get soul, it's easier to make you swim in that punchbowl.

And since it was the only part of your post that made sense, I can only comment that Obama's critique of Bernie had nothing to do with Obama's being black nor MLK.

Bernie and Isaac: A lifetime's worth of eyes and words, giving me a glimpse into a world I would've known nothing of without them. Other shoes to walk in before speaking.

I think young people are still making 'art' that shocks old fogies. A young (24) semi-co-worker fancies himself a songwriter and says he is working on a rap album. I am sure this old guy will be repulsed by it.

As only four years younger than Mr. Mac, I probably was much less urbane, listening to early corporate stuff like Barry Manilow and Tony Orlando and Captain and Tenille and Styx and Kansas.

The hippies let this happen because they were outnumbered. They didn't have the technical know-how to grow their own food, and as Nathaniel Hawthorne found out, farm work buries your creative energies under a pile of shite. See Brook Farm. Since they could not create their own system, they had to be assimilated into the existing system, more or less completely. So it goes. Tiddley pom.
