Her dream - all but gone
It was 1984 when I met her, my now X-wife (who died in July of 2005, about 10 years after we split up) - no major love loss between us, but some threads on the Olympics I have seen of late made me think of her.

She was a diver - high board and 'low board' (I forget all that terminology now). When my x was 10 and her sister was 13, her sister died of rye syndrome (sp?). When she was 16 her dad died in a boating accident - his business went under, they lost their house (her, her mom, and brother), and it all went to shit.

She worked hard though for the olympics. Had tons of 1st place ribbons, and went to the olympic tryouts. Under a lot of stress and fighting with her coach she walked out. And gave up her dream.

You and I may not care to watch the olympics, but there are a lot of fine young people who have went through hell for this dream.

I applaud their hard work, and wish I had worked as hard in my life for my dreams.

1. Good point. There is a story behind all the athletes...some, not so pretty, I'm sure.
So sorry to hear of her tragic experiences in life and struggles in the Olympics. It's easy to sit in our easy chairs and watch them work so hard.

My hat is off to all of them for following their dream.

2. That is what makes it all the more sad when some jerks try to politicize it...
So many worked so hard and so long to get there....

3. I'm going to be as kind as I can...but why do your wives/ex-wives tend to die young/get very sick?
I know your current wife is very sick because you've added multiple posts on the topic to DU.

I'm stunned to learn that you also had an ex-wife die young! WOW!

How is it possible to have had TWO wives with health complications that sent one to an early grave and another fighting desperately trying to avoid the same fate?????

4. The X had several birth defects
Half size kidney, colobomo, etc - she died about 10 years after I left her but had many health problems over the years (Docs said she would not make it to 13). I took good care of her, her new husband didn't....

9. Me? I think you need an "AVOID AT ALL COSTS" label.
WOW! How can I help make sure you don't wreak havoc on innocent lives in the future?
