The Katrina Memorial in New Orleans will entomb
the remains of approximately 85 victims who were either "not identified" or "not claimed." The Memorial is scheduled to open by the end of the month and will be located on Canal Street.

4. I heard it on WWL Radio News

I googled and got this (one of many stories on the subject.)

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/07/13/katrina_memorial_plans_delayed/

This story is different in the radio news story in that the radio indicates it should be opened this month.

3. Estimates say at least 1,800

But when you consider the number of transient folks in the area and others who may not have had anyone looking for them, it's likely higher.

And the numbers get even tricker when you look at folks who died as a result of Katrina after the storm: suicides, elderly who died from aftereffects of trauma, people who couldn't access medications, stress-related heart attacks, etc.

6. And beyond that, people who died on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
I was there in January 2006, and there were still people missing, presumably washed out to sea.
