I just spoke to Helen Thomas. She is on her way back!

She said she was a "real train wreck," but the weeks of treatment have helped,
and she should be coming home in maybe ten days. She is still in a hospital in
DC, but not for long. She's already reading her mail, and seeing friends, one of
whom, after Denver, I hope will be me.

Too tough to be smacked down!!



And too good to be silenced!

They should let her use all the questions she missed while she was out sick.

Just like they do when she is there asking them in person!

Great to hear she's on the mend...the lady is a national treasure!!!

The main thing is, I want to hear her ask the first question to
President Obama at his first press conference. A new/old start!

My father was a Washington print journalist for 50 years, and was
a close colleague of Helen's. I met her many times since I was a kid,
but we really only got to speaking and meeting up a lot after my father
passed away in 2000. Now, whenever we can, we meet for breakfast, coffee,
or dinner when I'm in Washington. My brother still lives there, so it's
once or twice a year at least.

Helen is of Lebanese origin, and she took me and my brother to an AMAZING
Lebanese restaurant in DC. The place looked like it had been transported
from Beirut in 1890, and hadn't changed since. It's called Mama Ayesha's,
and anyone in DC ought to check it out. Not only is the food beyond amazing,
but if you're lucky, you'll catch Helen there on occasion, and she's always
happy to say hi and have a brief chat. But do it between courses--keeping
her (or anyone) from food THAT good is torture!

Get well, Helen.

She will be going home tomorrow (!!).

BUT..the time in the hospital was not good for her legs, and they
atrophied somewhat (she was out for three months), and she will need
some physical therapy before she can walk again. She is not looking
forward to that as it will be (according to her) rather painful.

But she is nothing if not a fighter, and she will do what is
necessary. She asked me to call her again at home, and I will
do that over the weekend. She told me something else that will be
of interest to DU, and I will post it separately.
