God is an American?
Edited on Tue Aug-12-08 12:27 PM by Cyrano
In this “enlightened era,” there are far too many wingnuts who are “true believers,” and who will fight us to the death if we don’t see their “truths.” And many of these people hold the belief that "God is an American."

And you can add to these true believers, politicians driven by ambition and/or greed, and who are willing to use “God” as a stage prop. -- Perhaps that's part of the definition of what it means to be a politician.

If you assume for a moment there is some omnipotent being “watching over us,” why has the world always been, and still is, in such a state of chaos? Is He/She/It “testing” the human species? Does He/She/It not care? Does He/She/It even exist?

To all of you believers, I’m not mocking your beliefs. I am, however, attacking the moral certitude to which too many followers of the lunatic right subscribe without question. Not to mention their compulsion to pass laws to make us obey their beliefs.

Their beliefs,(perhaps unwittingly), have given us Reagan, George W. Bush and countless other historical tyrants. And for those who don’t yet “get it,” the GOP has no compunctions against using “God” to sell snake oil.

So here’s my question. Do ultra-religious, flag-waving, “super patriotic” American Christians really believe they are following the dictates of a supreme being? Are they letting themselves be deluded? Or are they just convinced that (their) God is (their version of) an American?

2. If there god was truly God than why didn't God provide America as the promise land?
Instead of the Middle East?

3. "If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me"
Can't remember who said it, but it's so typical of the right-wing idiocy.

15. It was probably Woody Allen.
After all, he said: "Not only is there no God. Try getting a plumber on the weekend."

4. God used to be an Englishman. What a fickle fellow!
He follows power. He's been Persian, Greek, Roman, Spanish, French, English, ... Sometimes one being, sometimes many.

You'd think they'd pick one that was capable of doing a decent job and earn what they pay him.

People have bought into the Reagan myth that America is God's light to the world...Falwell and Roberts picked up the ball with it when modleing their fascist perversion of Christianity

God being American is something new over the past 30 years. Previous generations weren't as arrogant to think God was actually one of them.

on Google, by simply referencing various Republican talking points/propaganda over the past 30 years, I'm not going to do your homework for you.

By the way, I got the line "God Is An American" from a song in a Broadway show titled "Red, White and Maddox." It was a musical in which Lester Maddox, a hardware store owner and a segregationist who handed out axe handles for free for the purpose of beating on the "THEMS", encouraged people to violently oppose the civil rights movement. His venom got him elected as the governor of Georgia.

This aside, go check out the verbiage spewed forth by the likes of James Dobson, Pat Robertson, (the late) Jerry Falwell, et al.

11. Lol...if god did exist (which he doesn't) I have no doubt he is a white capitalist.
Though I doubt he is American.

But he seems to hate competition, wants a monopoly of religion, and really, really hates people of other colors....which is why he likes to flood bangladesh, cause droughts in Africa, and wiped out New Orleans.

He punished Eve excessively for taking an apple without paying for it.

His son liked hanging around with tax collectors, money-lenders, and prositutes.

Sounds like a capitalist to me.

14. That whole "punishing Eve for the apple" thing...
If anyone ever needed proof that she was a Democrat, there it is.

Adam may also have been a Dem, but hey, even though they weren't married, there weren't any sensationalism journalists around to blow the whistle on him.

Then again, how much circulation could any newspaper have had in those days?
