NYC police propose massive public snooping system

Stephen C. Webster
Published: Tuesday August 12, 2008

With mass surveillance systems now prevalent in London, the burial place of George Orwell, America's 'Big Apple' is mulling its own 'Big Brother' network.

In a proposal by Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, 'Operation Sentinel' would create a technological surveillance veil that scans license plates and photographs vehicles as they cross bridges and enter or exit tunnels. Radiological detectors would also be installed to sniff out potential terrorism threats.

Data collected by the snooping would be stored for one month at a command center in Lower Manhattan. In all, some 3,000 public and private security cameras would be deployed.

"'This is just a planning document,'" said Paul J. Browne, a police spokesman, to the New York Times. "It's a vision of how it will work if all the components come together."

2. Why stop at a police state or two - why not just go bigtime with a Police Nation, ffs
Always for our "protection" is the excuse.

It works so well in Europe and I'm sure they appreciate it entirely too much.

UGH.

5. And they're taking the seats out of the subway cars to...
squeeze more people in because they have no money for upgraded service.

People are dying because of healthcare cutbacks, people are jobless and there are job training cutbacks, people who are lucky enough to have pensions are watching them dissolve...

And yet there's enough money for this "security" bullshit.

7. I posted a thread w/an article from the NY Times yesterday. What has to be understood
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 02:04 PM by OmmmSweetOmmm
is that this was the real point of NYC trying to get congestion pricing passed, which I with my forever in place tinfoil hat on said at the time the plan for congestion pricing was revealed. The Congestion pricing was going to scan all license plates entering Manhattan at midtown and send bills to those people. I immediately thought it was to keep track of who was entering the city. Congestion pricing failed in the state legislature.

This plan is far more reaching and would scan plates at all entry points into Manhattan.

My thread from yesterday and link to the NY Times article.

8. First NYC, then LA and other large cities, and then everywhere else
Once again the authoritarians are using the terror card to put through their police state. Hell, it looks like Osama(if he did indeed do the deed) got his wish with the 911 attack. He hated us for our freedoms, and now we're quickly losing them.

Sad, the local wide spot on I-70 now has stoplight cameras throughout their intersections. I'm glad I live in the country, in a county that's too poor at this point to even think about cameras. However I guarantee you that if you're even in a medium size city in this country, within twenty years you won't be able to walk outside your home without the event being recorded on film. Perhaps sooner.

And the American people not only continue to quietly acquiesce to outrage after outrage like this, they even contribute their own money to the effort, buying their own personal GPS trackers and such(in the form of cell phones, OnStar and the like).
