1. China and the US have been in a military standoff position

over Taiwan for almost 60 years. As far as the Chinese are concerned, Taiwan is a province of China.

when the Chinese captured the US pilots skirting Chinese air space in the first few months of Bush's presidency.

Bush first demanded the pilots be released and allowed to fly out. The Chinese instead cut the planes up and returned them on boats. Bush had to eat his words.
