Why is Chelsea speaking, but not Charlie Rangel??
Bill's speaking, she's getting a parade, she's getting nominated, Hillary's speaking, but not Charlie Rangel??

Did I miss something?? Is this her convention? :grr: sure seems like it:(

1. Charlie Rangel?! Not who I'd pick to speak anywhere.
He's got a terrible voice, and he's hard to understand under the best of circumstances. Not the guy I'd give stage time to at the convention.

Chelsea is a no brainer, with Hillary having her moment.

3. Moment??
... The Clinton Family took the thing over.. I'm wondering if thwey will let Obama even speak :)

Rangel's voice is not great, but he's certainly been around a long time..out of respect, he could have surely been given a few minutes..

8. Well, Hilly needs her catharsis, so if she needs her kid to be her cheerleader ....
Obama has clearly made a deal with them. They get to speak, all three of them, and Hill gets her vote on the nomination. But then they're on board and endorsing enthusiastically at the convention.

Obama is making a trade off. He knows that Charlie Rangel is not a guy to use if you're trying to nail down middle voters who may be watching. Charlie's politics are fine, but I don't find him an effective spokesman on TV, because his gravel voice and accent are not easily understood.

5. Wrong, Joey.
Actually, Rangel is embroiled in something of a scandal, regarding well-below-market-rate leases paid on two conjoined apartments, leased to him by a big NY contributor.

Sheesh.

6. To piss off an entirely different group of people
Someone is going to be pissed off or feel pissed on regardless of who speaks or what order they speak. So just jump on a wagon and either be pissed off over something or feel pissed on about another.

The choice is yours. I choose not to care.

Chelsea is just announcing her mother, probably just a few minutes to speak anyway.

17. Come to think of it, he didn't even deliver the black vote for Obama and was...
generally duplicitous about the whole thing.

Now, Rangel is a real war hero. I think he was at Pork Chop Hill with Doug Wilder.

18. Rangel was on the hotseat during the primaries...
did you watch his body language every time he "endorsed" Clinton? Pretty much the same as Tim Bishop, my Rep, who looked like he had something stuck in his throat when the name came up.

New York's Democratic Congressional delegation pretty much owed its soul to Clinton, or at least a shitload of campaign cash. The Clintons have vast amounts of political goodies to spread around and the primary was payback time. Hillary, btw, is popular in Rangel's district where she blew away the competition in both the Senatorial primary and the general. And where her husband conveniently set up an office keeping the name alive.

"Delivering the black vote" or keeping the bread buttered? No-brainer for anyone with Rangel's smarts.

21. Making the pain go away through appeasement. Some of the best...
comments I heard from all the pundits pontificating about the primary were the ones saying that Hillary's campaign never thought they would lose and really had no exit strategy.

So, here we are, with the power of an ex-President and an extremely politically powerful Senator demanding their swan song. Maybe they'll go away after this. Or maybe they won't...

Rangel? Why not any of a bunch of other Democrats who have been around a long time and could be excellent speakers?

24. No. Mostly people who actually know what they're talking about....
and have few axes to grind. Or are not full of themselves.

BTW, aside from cool quotes on DU, just what effect does anyone on cable news really have? Are the few hundred thousand people who watch them really that important? Same with newspaper columnists-- who reads newspapers at all any more, much less for the opinions?

(Gotta listen to the off hours on NPR and PBS and read the small print inside the Times. All sorts of people you've never heard of show up with good stuff.)

28. You just insulted the information level of someone who is likely vastly better...
informed than you are, if you think listening to the "off hours on NPR and PBS and read the small print inside the Times" makes someone well-informed.

If you are the gracious pacifist you claim to be, then why not start with the way you deal with others on the Internet?

So, what does make someone "well-informed"? It...
couldn't be the other reading and watching I do, or the organizations I belong to, could it? Or my circle of acquaintances? Or what I actually experience and work in?

I guess not. Must be something real special to make one informed, and watching cable news seems to be a large part of it.

(FWIW, I have found I rarely learn anything from any cable news-- it's usually either a rehash of stuff I've already heard somewhere else or one of the usual suspects spouting off.)

27. Charlie Rangel?!?!?!?
He's up to his eyebrows in scandal right now. Low ball Manhattan rent, and all of that. If he spoke, half the NYC Democrats I know would vomit, the other half wretch.
There are many Democrats who are not speaking who pay market rate rent like the rest of us. Why is Baraba Boxer not speaking? Why not Maxine Waters? Maybe because there are hundreds of elected Democrats and only a few short days of convention?
Paranoid pot stirring. Your nominee and your Party have a show to present. I am sure that Senator Obama is capable of making sure the events serve his candidacy to the fullest possible extent.
