Here's the original letter that prompted my response:
"I read carefully Ms. Jillian Costigan's letter of Aug. 4. I think Ms. Costigan should carefully double-check some of her statements.
In April, a University of California team of scientists reported that "Chinese emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases have been underestimated, and probably surpassed those of the U.S. sometime in 2006 or 2007." So the United States is no longer the "world's biggest polluter" as Ms. Costigan claims.
Ms. Costigan further asserts that the "world's leading scientists" believe that global warming is proven. Dr. Arthur Robinson, cofounder of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, along with thousands of other respected scientists, have signed numerous petitions declaring that global warming is not proven or is not caused by human activity.
Perhaps Ms. Costigan doesn't believe that the founder of a leading scientific institute is a "leading scientist" and would rather trust the "science" of Al Gore.
David J. Melich
Chester Springs"
And my response. Is it too long for publication, do you think?
"n his letter of Aug. 15, David Melich suggests that another reader needed to double-check her statements. I humbly suggest that Mr. Melich needs to do the same.
Mr. Melich refers to studies by one Dr. Arthur Robinson. Dr. Robinson may indeed be a "leading scientist." Unfortunately, he's not a climate scientist. In fact, none of the faculty members of the institute that distributed this petition are climate scientists. Their scientific opinion regarding this matter is no better than the average non-scientist.
As for the petition send out by this so-called "leading scientific institute," the screening procedures were so lax that the petition included notable signatories such as fictional characters from the TV show M*A*S*H and one of the members of the Spice Girls. All leading climate scientists, no doubt (if we are to use the obviously low standards of David Melich and Arthur Robinson).
Al Gore's science may not be perfect either, but I trust it a whole lot more than that of Mr. Melich's "leading scientist.""
