Just go in and buy let say a bag of M&Ms......go to the registrar and pay for it and ask the cashier if the management has asked them to vote against democratic candidates especially against Obama.....hope a member of management is within earshot and watch yourself be asked to leave the store and the employee asked to take a break......

.....I did that at an Orlando area WM yesterday and found myself asked to leave after being told I can not ask employees questions about WM policy's.....

Seriously it may not be much of a job but it might be all someone has. Wal-mart isn't the kindest employer. They may think that kicking you out isn't enough. They might decide to take it out on the poor employee.

These employees need their job. Why put them in a compromising situation?

I can promise you, ANYONE working at your local wallyworld is there only because their other job opportunities are limited and this is the best they can do for themselves and their families at this point in their lives. Not even the store manager makes very many decisions, they do what they are told or they are fired just like the cashiers and stock clerks - and they are not nearly as well paid as you might think.

Sure, there are some asshole store managers - the one's that seem to get all the press by locking cleaning crews into the store and not allowing one who broke his leg out to get medical attention. Do you have any idea how low on the "management" totem pole a night shift Walmart manager is? I doubt they are rocket scientist material quite yet (maybe someday). But most Walmart managers are just working stiffs trying to get their kids a better life like the rest of us.

The guaranteed asshole is the one going in there to buy the M&M's rather than the local mom & pop place that paid it's cashiers and stock clerks a half decent, though still low, wage.

I'm all for organizing workers. I'm not in favor of causing scenes with unsuspecting employees which may cost them their jobs.

but if all the walmart workers got fired then perhaps they would get jobs at a better company.

Go so far as to say "something a Republican...." but I agree that it may cause problems for the employee. You could probably reach the same result without impact on the employees by asking the manager directly to respond to the allegations. It is definitely a free speech issue, but we should not force people who choose not to engage in the process to do so at risk of their livelihood.

....and just maybe being asked to take a break is what it will take for these employees to find representation...Don't you think the employee will asked management why she was asked to leave the area???........

make up a rule on the spot that only one busload could come in at a time - or - that they don't allow any shoppers coming in by a busload (or maybe, they would say they can only come by the busload if using Wal-Mart buses).

ask only questions about their products.

for instance, "was this made in america?" or "is this union-made?"

when you get a "no", just look disappointed and put the item back. rinse, repeat.

It would be one thing if you are trying to honestly tell them you are behind them, but suggesting they do this "in earshot of their manager" puts the employee in a really awkward position.

I was implying that the OP has the right to say whatever he or she pleases while in that store. I was asking if he or she asked the management who kicked him or her out of the store if they are opposed to the First Amendment. If you cared about civility and rational discourse, you wouldn't be so sanctimonious and insulting toward me, a fellow DUer, and you wouldn't have rushed to judgement about my post without asking me to clarify it, as -- obviously -- I was typing in a conversational manner.

Your clarification still isn't a violation of the First Amendment. A business has the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason, as long as they're not violating various civil rights laws.

If you know of an instance where a business was found in violation of the First Amendment in the scenario you described then I'll humbly apologize.

I never said that they are violating the First Amendment. Don't try to twist my intent or put words into my mouth. I may be well within my rights as a shop owner to show someone the door if I don't agree with or approve of something he or she says or asks, but that act makes me a hypocrite if I firmly adhere to and espouse the concept of free speech.

you should expect to have to deal with the people unhappily subjected to them. It's not personal; it never is. You, as an employee, are just as much a victim of the corporatocracy as they are.

On the other hand, if you actively support those policies, then it does become personal. As it should.

But then, most people have no trouble psychologically separating themselves from the company they work for. Watch out for those that do have trouble.

Maybe a more subtle approach would be to find out what union would most likely represent the employees (if they were allowed to vote in one) and get one of their shirts.
