If Kucinich had been a nativist, family-values type, the fact that he was on his third marriage and that it was with a foreigner 30 years younger would have been a story. He wasn't so it wasn't.
Had Spitzer not been a crusading goody two-shoes actively making political hay out of busting prostitution rings, his flagrant idiocy wouldn't have been such a deal. As it was, it ENDED his political career overnight.
Had Edwards not been a champion of the poor, his big house wouldn't have been an issue, just as Gore's mansion wouldn't have been an issue if he wasn't a "little footprint" type of guy.
Edwards ran on many premises, and one of them was that he was loyally married to his first wife, a relationship dating back 30 years to their college days. Thus, this revelation was news. People are FASCINATED by sex; it's a constant reminder of the small-mindedness of the human critter and probably because they can't get enough themselves.
If Larry Craig had been a married guy who had voted for gay rights, it would have been less of a story. Got it?
Edwards drew lots of fire for many reasons: people didn't think he'd paid his dues, having had such a short political career, and people have a fascination with and jealously of the physically attractive. Others didn't believe him, thinking he was a fake and they thirsted for any grounds to denounce him. Those on the right correctly saw him as a formidable opponent and wanted to marginize and destroy him. (I still think he is sincere about his economic and social beliefs and the sticker's still on my car.)
It's about the press: when something surfaces that directly contradicts the image, it's news.
