Isn't it plainly obvious that

The Russo-Georgian conflict is over the missile shield and the oil pipelines?

I mean, both issues are on the bush regime's hotlist...cold war 2, here we come.

3. I have seen some arguments to the contrary here

and, frankly, I am surprised. I have even heard the argument that russia is flexing their muscles becasue they know that we are "too overextended" because of Iraq.

I have news for you, take a look at what we spend on defense in this country, compare it to what every other country spends (percentage wise) and deduct the Iraq/Afghan conflict budget...

then tell me we still wouldn't erase Russia in a head on conflict (assuming the chinese didn't intervene, which I wouldn't count on)

This leads me to the conclusion that the real reason for the mess over there is the obvious one - oil and missile defense.
