This is truly bizarre.

Chinese TV has apparently deemed womens' navels to be too explicit and has digitally removed them from marathon coverage.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in the meeting where that decision was made...

10. LOL, Belly Buttons were also banned here (in the 1960s)
 Remember Barbara Eden 'I Dream Of Jeannie'
1960's TV show;
"I Dream of Jeannie:1st episode
The Lady in the Bottle
Date: 9/18/1965 description-
"When the rocket launch for a space mission goes awry, its astronaut, Captain Anthony Nelson, finds himself stranded on a desert island. There, he finds a beautiful antique bottle lying there on the sand. When Tony opens the bottle, he is shocked to find a beautiful, 2,000-year-old genie named Jeannie, who is now calling him her new Master and willing to grant him anything he wishes."

Women are competing practically naked. Men in the same sports are not.

14. I learned this one yesterday...
In the case of beach volleyball, sand presents a real obstacle to perfect performance. Baggy clothing, such as T-shirts and shorts, traps sand against the body, irritates the skin, and makes playing more difficult. The outfits worn by the women volleyball players actually serves a practical purpose... keeping sand out of the underpants.

18. They get better ratings when they are half-naked.
I think that's the real reason. I suppose whoever decides these things doesn't think half-naked men would get good ratings. I think I'd watch more men's volleyball if they were dressed similarly.

Sand can't get into underpants if you don't have any on.
LOL.
Seriously, I find it hard to believe that having on bikini bottoms that actually cover more of the butt is going to adversely affect the female player's performance.

By the way, that skimpy suit is a uniform. Even if the women wanted to wear something with more coverage, or more comfortable, they can't.

42. True story:
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 12:28 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
For years in Japan there was a faccility full of little old ladies who worked full time with little pink pearl erasers eradicating all the (female) pubic hair in imported men's magazines like Playboy so they could be sold there. (Men would seek out copies with inferior erasing jobs.)

One of the stranger professions.

43. It sounds strange but I'm told the Japanese law specifically prohibits ...
... showing PUBIC HAIR in porn (adult magazines) and nudie bars. Their law is silent on the body parts themselves. Apparently, that led to even more child porn ... and extensive depilation. I've never heard how such a "spotty" law came about.

55. Times have changed in Japan
Pubic hair has been appearing in Japanese adult magazines since at least the early '90s, although I think they still don't allow it in the Japanese equivalent of "R" movies. It used to be one could see a fair amount of bare breasts on late night Japanese TV, but not any more. Japanese adult movies still make generous use of "mosaics" to block out or distort strategic body parts. Wouldn't have a clue about the nudie bars.

This is just my theory, but I think the reason for the crazy Japanese modesty laws was to drum up steady business for the more hardcore adult-oriented businesses.

46. I believe they are using the "blur" tool
they use to hide identities in reality shows. Every once in a while one of them would make an unpredictable move and would be EXPOSED.

But the thought of someone working through 2+ hours of video for each bellybutton is mind-boggling.

They are trying to get to the moon, something we did 40 years ago.

And they have a taboo about showing women's navels on TV. On the TV show I Dream of Jeannie in the last 60's network censors required Barbara Eden to cover up her navel.
