Although those things will certainly go down in history like other atrocities, using history as a guide, the looting and destruction of the libraries and museums will play a larger role in historical discussions. When people talk about the sackings of Library of Alexandria, the politics are rarely remembered, with the exception of the religious motivations of the Christians and later the Muslims, what is discussed is all the lost knowledge and history.
The same could be said of Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt. Few remember that Napoleon dreamed of being an Alexander the Great type conqueror and wasn’t strong enough to attack England directly, but most do know that his soldiers shot at and destroyed the Sphinx’s nose. The Iraq War also is the cause of priceless ancient books and artifacts being lost forever to history. There are some artifacts being returned but nowhere near all will ever be found, as many were destroyed. This was all done on the orders of a president who was warned by scholars the world over how valuable these artifacts are and these warnings where also ignored while the Ministry of Oil was a priority, in need of protection. .
