http://www.mem.com/Story.aspx?ID=1560009Smitty was born Marguerite Johnson on January 16, 1919 in Cairo, Illinois. She married Jim on March 29, 1945 in Memphis, Tennessee while he was on leave from his service as an officer in the United States Air Corps during World War II. After the war, Jim and Smitty relocated to Jim's hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. ...
She is survived by two daughters, Dixie Burd and Cindy Hensley McCain; five grandchildren, Bobby Burd, Meghan McCain, Jack McCain, Jimmy McCain, and Bridget McCain; one great-granddaughter, Deann "Burd" Mitchel and two great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Jeri Harbolt.
On edit: A poster at TPM last spring wrote, "Her full name as revealed by the database Veromi is Deborah Ann "Dixie" Burd and she was born April 18, 1953." (
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/05/mccain_rejects_rightwing_preac.php) This doesn't make a lot of sense -- most likely, the database is wrong, but is it possible that Dixie was born illegitimately while Jim Hensley was off in the slammer for his organized crime connections? Something seems very mixed up here.
On second edit: Dixie is definitely not the same person as Deborah Ann. A Newsmeat listing of contributions by people named Burd in Arizona (
http://newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?city=Mesa&st=AZ&last=burd) shows donations to McCain in 1982-86 and again in 1999 from Dixie Lea Burd, housewife, and Bob J. Burd of Hensley & Co. Then on 7/5/07, it shows donations of $2300 to McCain for the primary from Dixie L. Burd, James R. Burd, and (at a different zip code) Deborah A. Burd.
It looks like Dixie was was married to Bob J. Burd (1932-2004). According to Veromi, James R. Burd is 54 -- which means he could be Dixie's son "Bobby" if Dixie and her mother "Smitty" both had their first child at the age of 17 or 18. Since Smitty's obituary from 2006 refers to a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren, that seems likely to be the case, and Deborah Ann is presumably Bobby's wife.
Cindy was also born in 1954, so she would have grown up with a nephew of her own age and a half-sister old enough to be her mother. And the other half sister must also have been at least ten years older. Reason enough, I guess, to feel like an only child.
On third edit: Confirmed it.
http://genealogytrails.com/ill/pulaski/obits_b/bobby_burd.htmlBobby (Bob) J. Burd, age 71, passed away January 1, 2004.
Bob was born in Mounds, Illinois. His memories live on with his wife Dixie, son James (Bob Jr.), daughter-in-law Deborah, granddaughter Deann, grandson Michael ... Bob was Senior Vice-President of Hensley and Company the local, Anheuser-Busch Distributor.
On fourth edit: Veromi shows Dixie Lea Burd as being 74. So she was born in 1934, when Smitty was just 15. Interesting.
