NYC police want to screen Manhattan-bound vehicles for radiation, other terrorism threats
NEW YORK (AP) _ The New York Police Department is working on a plan to track every car, truck or other vehicle entering Manhattan and screen them for radioactive materials and other terrorism threats.

The ambitious proposal, called Operation Sentinel, is being developed alongside a separate $90 million security initiative to tighten security at the World Trade Center site and elsewhere in lower Manhattan in response to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Police officials say Operation Sentinel would rely on license-plate readers, radiation detectors and closed-circuit cameras installed at the 16 bridges and four tunnels serving Manhattan. About a million vehicles drive onto the island every day.

The vehicle data — license plate numbers, radiological readings and photos — would be automatically analyzed by computers programmed with information about suspicious vehicles.

1. Wouldn't a nuke or even 'dirty' bomb be just as effective
over on the Jersey side?

3. Probably... people would SWIM to Manhattan if that happened
Of course, the ferries would be not working and the tunnels would be blocked. People would swim across the water, make rafts, walk to Manhattan on top of the jammed cars, and so on. It would be a disaster, and this dumb-ass proposal is just FUD to sell the next level of population control to the masses.

5. Indeed it is
Typical NYC.
I've lived here my whole life and I've seen it many times.
Big media blitz and millions of dollars spent on "studies" and half-assed equipment.

Three years from now there will be a small item in the NYT Metro section informing us that, due to "technical problems", the whole thing was scrapped.
