Senate candidate Kleeb unveils policy paper
BY ROBYNN TYSVER
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Democratic Senate candidate Scott Kleeb called today for a crackdown on businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

He also called for a "responsible end" to the Iraq War.

His policy views were all part of a 56-page paper that Kleeb unveiled at a luncheon for women supporters at the French Cafe in downtown Omaha.

Kleeb released the paper after conducting a listening tour across Nebraska, with the help of his wife, Jane Fleming Kleeb. In it, he outlines his stance on a myriad of issues, including his belief that green technology can create thousands of jobs and the need for more diplomacy in foreign policy.

"Real leadership isn't just telling folks what you think," said Kleeb. "Real leadership is about telling folks what you're going to do."

Kleeb is running for the U.S. Senate against Republican Mike Johanns. This is his second bid for office. He lost his first bid for public office in 2006 against U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith in the 3rd Congressional District.

1. It's too bad Kleeb is mildly unknown in Wyoming. It would be nice to see him win.

3. How does Scott propose to deal with the fallout from such crackdowns?
Exhibit A: Postville, IA

I like Scott Kleeb, and he's obviously getting my vote in November. However, I'd hate to see what happened in Postville happen in Fremont, Dakota City, Omaha, Crete, Grand Island, Lexington, Gordon, and Gibbon (let me know if I forgot a town with a slaughter facility). Enforcement has to be part of the equation, but I really want a candidate who will offer answers to how we're going to secure the border, while being reasonable with those who already live and work here, and creating a means for Mexicans, Cubans, Haitians, and others who want to live and work here a sensible path to citizenship.

I'll grant Agriproessors had, and has, major labor issues, but the INS raids have split families and led to horrific social fallout.
