My evangelical, born again christian, drug addicted, crazy friend left today
She knows that the earth is only 6,000 years old. She knows that her invisible sky being friend is watching over her and that I am going to hell.

It was a train wreck from fucking hell. I was in the 7th circle of Hell.

She lectured me on how abortion is murder and how Jesus really does care and about being saved and how John McCain was a god fearing man. She told me why I was so wrong for voting for the anti-christ, black man Obama,

She brought her loud, obnoxious kid and her two dogs over and she had one giant anxiety attack after another because she was trying to come off of prescription meds. She begged me to let her stay at our home while she detoxed from 30 to 40 opiates a day.

My two kids told her that God is a figment of her imagination. She told them they were going to burn in Hell.

My kids are 7 and 8.

I had to hold her hand as she cried and went mental - BUT FOLKS....

She made sure to tell me that I am a major fuck up because I do not believe in god.

The 2 days she was here was absolute HELL. She ate our satanic food and slept in our satanic bed and let her kid play with my satanic kids .... Her dogs ate our satanic dog food and shit in our satanic yard.... (I am an atheist - this means to her that I worship satin.)

Here's a good one, when my daughter wanted to watch "The Golden Compass" The crazy woman went mental saying it was a satanic movie and that she would forbid the movie to be played. Her kid was praying and crying for us all to be saved.
It was a magical moment and if anything has ever convinced me that these people are INSANE.... This one goes to the top of the list.

Last but not least - She called her son a HOMOSEXUAL when she was angry with him... BTW, he is 7 years old. She meant it in a derogatory term. My son, who is 8, asked her why she hated gay people.... She answered that "Gay is a nice word for sick people who will burn in hell."

If you think she is extreme, well... you are wrong. She is typical of their movement.

I need to scream now... My kids need to scream with me - They were horrified along with me.

No sense in subjecting yourself or your family to that kind of abuse. It is abuse.

6. She used to be
way less crazy - at least she used to be sort of normal - then she went all Jesus Freak on me and now she is a medical basket case.

I feel sorry for her son who is disabled - Yes he is obnoxious but he is really just trying to keep his own sanity....

I let her in because I could not turn away a cry for help.

But since I am not a Christian, I guess i don't get any points in the imaginary book in the sky. :)

But I couldn't be that charitable myself. I'd fear for the safety -- or at least sense of safety -- of my family. Your "friend" sounds like the type who ends up on the evening news having committed some gaudy and bloody crime before snuffing herself out.

68. I was thinking the same thing. The woman sounds deranged.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of deranged people in the U.S. right now. Our lack of healthcare keeps it that way. In our country there are no safety nets, but there is plenty of state-sponsored propaganda keeping the desperate and sick addicted to the idea of a God who cares about nothing but smiting homosexuals and "demoncrat" liberals.

Your friend is mentally ill. She needs help and so does her son, who should not be subjected to that abuse. I recommend notifying social services. I'm quite serious.

She wants mccain, a man who believes in endless war, and cutting social programs

If your so-called friend believes that is "christian" then stay away from her, because anyone who would tell my kids that they were going to go to hell, can go to hell

Her: That is part of Gods plan

12. The key words here are that she is drug addicted & crazy...
In her sane and sober days there must have been a reason you became friends, but those days are over now. I hope you will forgive me for being very direct: Never subject your children to this again, and seriously consider calling Child Protective Services on behalf of her children.

The ways she expresses her religious orientation is just another reflection of her disordered mind.

I am friends and neighbors with any number of people who take their religion very seriously and believe they have a personal relationship with God and Jesus and Hashem. They live in the world of reality and are as sane as you and I. None of them are so rude as to tell me and mine that we are going to Hell, and I am not so rude as to tell them I think their worldview is too narrow for me. Otherwise we wouldn't be friends.

Your former friend is nuts -- and rude and cruel and nasty. She repaid your great kindness with shit. You and your kids just got sucked into that and have been traumatized.

My sister and I dealt with one our mother's visits (after she was out of the driveway) by running around my kitchen table yelling: "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout! Ahh! Ahh! Ahh!" until we stopped feeling crazy and started laughing at the old bat who gave birth to us.

Try it -- may it bring healing laughter to you, too, and help you start to regain your equilibrium. :grouphug:

Hekate

25. Bingo, Darlin'
And long-term use and abuse of drugs can cause psychosis as well. It's well-documented fact. I have seen heroin-induced psychosis first-hand and close-up. Yeesh. Yoooo-glee. In ways that can defy description by even the well-schooled. I don't know you can ever be effectively prepared for confronting that sort of thing in "real life".

Ah, well...we can sit and posit causative factors all day...suffice to say the woman is in very clear need of hospitalization and detox. For starters. While she is there, complete re-assessment, change of course-of-care and a medication audit. She is desperately unwell, and quite frankly, right on the cusp of being a danger to herself and others. Her psychiatrist sounds like he or she might need a refresher course or 12 as well. Her doctor is clearly missing a metric shitload of danger signs.

Her kid definitely needs out of that, post-haste and forthwith. A call to the local CPS is definitely in order, nay, desperately necessary. That kid is being traumatized.

One more thing: Around these parts, we had a little mini-scandal with a self-described minister and his "congregation" who were targeting mental health consumers and doing all those exploitative things you might fear. At the end of the day, exploited mental health consumers give their tithes, free labor and more real well, in exchange for mumbo-jumbo about the driving out of demons and not having to take their meds anymore and other things you might well expect. It can be a community tailor-made for these kinds of reptiles. It sounds like some of that might be in play here.

98. Exactly.
The pull towards fundamentalism is based on psychological need rather than ideological beliefs. The belief in helping others (by offering them what they need rather than what you want to dump on them)is an advanced concept that they don't want to grasp because it requires really listening to other people and not judging.

A reception desk in a sort of office building.
Receptionist
(Rita Davies) Yes, sir?
Man I'd like to have an argument please.
Receptionist Certainly, sir. Have you been here before...?
Man No, this is my first time.
Receptionist I see. Do you want to have the full argument, or were you thinking of taking a course?
Man Well, what would be the cost?
Receptionist Yes, it's one pound for a five-minute argument, but only eight pounds for a course of ten.
Man Well, I think it's probably best if I start with the one and see how it goes from there. OK?
Receptionist Fine. I'll see who's free at the moment ... Mr. Du-Bakey's free, but he's a little bit conciliatory ... yes, try Mr. Barnard - Room 12.
Man Thank you.
The man walks down a corridor. He opens door 12. There is a man at a desk.
Mr Barnard (shouting) What do you want?
Man Well I was told outside ...
Mr Barnard Don't give me that you snotty-faced heap of parrot droppings!
Man What!
Mr Barnard Shut your festering gob you tit! Your type makes me puke! You vacuous toffee-nosed malodorous pervert!
Man Look! I came here for an argument.
Mr Barnard (calmly) Oh! I'm sorry, this is abuse.
Man Oh I see, that explains it.
Mr Barnard No, you want room 12A next door.
Man I see - sorry. (exits)
Mr Barnard Not at all. (as he goes) Stupid git.

Mis-quoting Monty Python surely leads to eternal damnation.

In all seriousness, You've already been through hell. You have nothing to worry about at all.

55. Very correct
I am aware of this - She totally drains me. She takes advantage of me and it doesn't matter that her two dogs and her child kept me up 100% of the night - the dogs barked at everything and the child would not even consider sleep as an alternative. He woke up my husband and my daughter and demanded to have something to eat at 4:00 A.M. - I informed him that the hospital cafeteria was closed. I had made a nice dinner and fed everyone at 7:30 - I then made popcorn for a treat and then they all got ice cream - I was DONE.

I am still exhausted.

This friend - yesterday morning announced that she needed to go do an errand and would be back in 30 minutes - She left the kid and the dogs here and was gone for FOUR FUCKING HOURS.

I asked her if she had gone out to score some more prescription meds... Oh, nooooooo, she said - I asked if she had been abducted by aliens which would explain the missing time - She kept saying "I couldn't have been gone that long." Then I suggested that she had multiple personalities and that one of her alters had taken over thus explaining the lost time.

BTW, I had already arranged for a friend of my daughter to come over to spend the afternoon - so I had yet another child to feed lunch to -

I am emotionally wrung out and am happy my home is void of the body snatchers for now....

BTW - the only real explanation for her disappearance was she was out doctor/dentist shopping for more meds. I am not a fucking idiot.

Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 08:24 AM by Dorian Gray
why the hell are you friends with her? And why did you help her? You should have told her to go get help from someone at her church.

(Oh, she was probably too embarrassed!)

I can't believe that someone in such a state would be so obnoxious to the person or family helping her. Though, I do have to say, a 7 and 8 year old coming in to tell her, in the thralls of detox, that God is a fairytale probably wasn't a good moment for her. I might have reacted badly if someone did that to me when detoxing! But, to be honest, you probably shouldn't have subjected your children to that hot mess of a nightmare in the first place. That wasn't at all fair to them.

And then I'd close it behind her when she left.

No WAY I could take that kind of crap - and by the way, my hat's off to you for doing the decent thing.

39. Ask her why none of her
"Christian" friends would take her in. Ask her who would Jesus call homosexual in anger. Tell her that her minister can minister to her.

And don't worship satin. Most of the stuff they make today that passes for satin is real crap. I'd suggest velvet, but it's hard to find a good velvet anymore either. However, some nice yarns are being made of such things as bamboo and silk, and so you might want to go there.

47. She actually is a bit extreme.
Most fundies and evangelicals aren't drug-addicted (not allowed in those churches), manic, or borderline personalities. I'm not saying I haven't known people like her, because I have, but they've been the minority in my experience.

She should've been at the hospital, coming off those meds and obviously not doing too well. I would've put my foot down at her trying to control my kids or hurting them at all. When my evangelical mom had her bipolar manic episode and went deep into the darkness, she spewed some of that filth at my kids (going to hell, etc.), and I got her out of my house and into the hospital. Then, I had talks with my kids (about the same age as yours) about why Ya-ya was sick and what she said wasn't true. Your kids sound like they're dealing with it well, but I'd worry that anything like that could hurt in the long run.

50. If the woman is trying to come off of drugs, you shouldn't hold these statements against her.
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 10:11 AM by Marr
People are going to say and do mean things when they're that uncomfortable. Give her some space on that-- she may come back in a year or two and be a completely different person.

I have known people who said and did similar things to those you describe who were not on medication. Maybe she's just that way, drugs or not-- I don't know. The fundamentalist mind is pretty strange and I'd agree that it does seem like mental illness in some people. Not all religious people, of course-- just these really extreme fundamentalists who never seem to get off the subject of religion. There's something just not right there.

59. I believe it's a full-blown, compulsive-based addiction
They appear to be unable to control their thinking about religion. They drag religion into discussions that have nothing to do with it. They're at their finest (in their view) when they're all wired up about hellfire and damnation (the seratonin kick), then when they're done, seem to fall into dreamy self-righteousness (the dopamine kick).

Combined with prescription medication addiction, this person (and the whole family) clearly need help well beyond what a single person can provide. You may remember I lived for six years with Ahknaten and watched his descent into painkiller addiction, ending with a police visit.

I've also had my fair share of confrontations with wild-faced, wacko fundies. I pray they will find Christ.

deal with that but even worse for the child she is warping. :(

As an atheist, you were far more of a "Christian" in opening your home to her, turning the other cheek, and holding her hand through some very difficult times. How sad that her mind is so closed and poisoned that she couldn't even see that. I hope that someone day she will find her way out of that crazy fire-and-brimstone mindset, and for her kid's sake I hope it's soon.

82. I had a dogwalker like that.
I did a Masters degree in religion many years ago which means I have a lot of interesting books on religion around the house.

To my dogwalker it meant I was tainted and she gave me lectures when she saw a book on Buddhism- and it wasn't even a good book. I mean, I started reading and put it down because I lost interest. She kept lecturing me on reading the Bible. I've studied the orginial Biblical languages so I am capable of a good argument, but I rarely read the Bible any more.

Meanwhile, the dogwalker is involved in a Satanic struggle to give up drinking and smoking.

I don't drink or smoke. Its not a big spiritual thing. They give me migraines.

But she wanted me to renounce Buddha and have a spiritual struggle... except the Buddhist book was boring.

People like this need drama.

The last time I saw her she was still drinking and smoking. I couldn't trust her to walk my dog because she would come over drunk and walk him without putting the leash on. All the spiritual stuff wasn't helping.

And so have your kids. Hold them close and let them talk about how they feel and perceive what has happened. Don't try to ignore the subject, because your kids have been traumatized. It's very scary to think of hell and punishment and an angry and vengeful god. Once you listen to them you'll know what to say to them.

And congratulations on being a friggin decent human being who actually lives the christian values of kindness and brotherhood.

Both times they ripped me off, one even stole my rent money. My wife has a Christian friend who came into town and needed a place to stay, we allowed her to stay with us, she ripped me off. That's three for three.

I know that not ALL Christians are thieves and back stabbers, but the ones my wife and I help out seem to be.
