Bush Covered up Musharraf Ties with Qaeda, Khan
http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=43605

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (IPS) - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's resignation Monday brings to an end an extraordinarily close relationship between Musharraf and the George W. Bush administration, in which Musharraf was lavished with political and economic benefits from the United States despite policies that were in sharp conflict with U.S. security interests.

It is well known that Bush repeatedly praised Musharraf as the most loyal ally of the United States against terrorism, even though the Pakistani military was deeply compromised by its relationship with the Taliban and Pakistani Islamic militants.

What has not been reported is that the Bush administration covered up the Musharraf regime's involvement in the activities of the A. Q. Khan nuclear technology export programme and its deals with al Qaeda's Pakistani tribal allies.

The problem faced by the Bush administration when it came into office was that the Pakistani military, over which Musharraf presided, was the real terrorist nexus with the Taliban and al Qaeda. As Bruce Riedel, National Security Council (NSC) senior director for South Asia in the Bill Clinton administration, who stayed on the NSC staff under the Bush administration, observed in an interview with this writer last September, al Qaeda "was a creation of the jihadist culture of the Pakistani army".

If there was a state sponsor of al Qaeda, Riedel said, it was the Pakistani military, acting through its Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Directorate.

Vice President Dick Cheney and the neoconservative-dominated Bush Pentagon were aware of the intimate relationship between Musharraf's regime and both the Taliban and al Qaeda. But al Qaeda was not a high priority for the Bush administration.

1. Here is a buried news story about Bin Laden in Pakistan from 60 Minutes. Pakistan Hospital 9/10/2001

Hospital Worker: I Saw Osama
Accused Terrorist Said To Have Had Dialysis On Sept. 10

Jan. 28, 2002

(CBS) Everyone remembers what happened on Sept. 11 and, reports CBS News Correspondent Barry Petersen, here's the story of what may have happened the night before.

In a tale as twisted as the hunt for Osama bin Laden, CBS Evening News has been told that the night before the Sept. 11 terrorists attack, Osama bin Laden was in Pakistan. He was getting medical treatment with the support of the very military that days later pledged its backing for the U.S. war on terror in Afghanistan.

Pakistan intelligence sources tell CBS News that bin Laden was spirited into a military hospital in Rawalpindi for kidney dialysis treatment.

"On that night," said a medical worker who wanted her identity protected, "they moved out all the regular staff in the urology department and sent in a secret team to replace them." She said it was treatment for a very special person and "the special team was obviously up to no good."

"They military had him surrounded," said a hospital employee who also wanted his identity masked, "and I saw the mysterious patient helped out of a car. Since that time," he said, "I have seen many pictures of the man. He is the man we know as Osama bin Laden. I also heard two army officers talking to each other. They were saying that Osama bin Laden had to be watched carefully and looked after."

4. AQ Khan is another outstanding matter from Dec1992 BCCI report. Yet some Dems claim it was fully
vetted and dealt with.....funny....no one has yet described how GHWBush or Bill Clinton allowed access to documents and further examination of the many outstanding matters that were requested in that report, and the CIA drugrunning revelations in 1996 that were also part of IranContra-BCCI operations still did not prompt cooperation from Clinton and his WH.

Funny thing....Clinton doesn't even mention one word about AQ Khan or BCCI in his entire book, a book written after 9-11, 2001, and knowing full well that the funding of global terrorism was a key part of the investigation.

Maybe because his biggest primary donor in 1992 was Poppy Bush's longtime partner in BCCI's operations and the man who brought BCCI into this country, Jackson Stephens. He and GHWBush expected impeachment for Poppy after the release of the Dec 1992 BCCI report. So Poppy ran the worst campaign in history, and Jackson's boy in Arkansas gets into the WH and proceeds to tell the nation and Democrats in DC that they must move on so GHWBush can have a peaceful retirement. And all we got in return for that benevolence was Bush2, 9-11, this Iraq war and sabre-rattling towards Iran.
