19. Lots of people bike in San Francisco and Seattle
Do you have more hills than those areas?

I concede that those areas might have more shoulders, etc though.

i find walking far more practical esp. after an accident that was pretty scary, you just don't get hurt like that whilst walking

12. Well, that depends
I'd definitely say that it would be walking or biking, UNLESS the fuel for that activity comes from the planet's biggest problem: eating meat.

20. Is the planet's biggest problem a thing or a mentality?
My beef (no pun intended) is the notion that certain things that would help the planet immensely just aren't even considered, for no really good reason.

I realize that the consumption of meat is bad, but well, why does it have to taste so damn good?

13. I live 2 miles from work. I bike when the weather is good, public transit in the snow&rain.

Parking is a nightmare and road work is causing my co-workers (who live in the low-tax burbs) to have 1, sometimes 2 hour commutes.

What's your limit for walking places?

Anything more than a mile strains my short attention span, so I switch to a bike.

23. Helium balloon lawn chair
with hand held battery fan for direction, pin for emergency descent and call ahead to make sure the helium tank for the birthday balloons at the store is full. Drink lots of beer for emergency ballast.

I know the fan batteries are still wasteful but at least you can't buy too much stuff to bring back.

28. A quick run for short distances
A long run for long distances.

A motorcycle when time is short.

To quote Steven Wright: "Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time."

32. Depends on short distance.
Anything less than 2 miles, prefer walk but bike is 2nd.
3-5 miles, bike 1st - bus if available close 2nd.
5-10 miles - bus if available 1st, bike 2nd. Car if must.

If there's forecast for rain then bus for anything greater than 2 miles, car if bus not available. I'll still risk a bike for less than 2 miles in the rain.

If I'm doing some heavy duty grocery shopping: Bus, Car or even better: have it delivered.

That's good for life back home in the UK.

It's 3 miles to the bus stop where I live now, 2 miles to the nearest store. Too spread out here, gotta car it I'm afraid. I do however have the option for paratransit for getting to/from work.

Mark.

37. Walking.
Biggest drawback is the time it takes to walk, best benefit is that you can walk in pretty relaxed state if there are sidewalks on the route. Walking 5 miles is relaxing for me. Biking is second best only because of the playing in traffic aspect.

41. The specs say it propels the bike at 20 mph
Most cyclists can easily attain that speed without electric assist.

And can you imagine the injuries / expenses you'd incur if you wrecked the damn thing?
