In 1963 his brother John was assassinated, in '64 Teddy was in a plane crash. In 1968 his brother Bobby was assassinated followed in 1969 by the infamous "Chappaquiddick" incident.
Teddy no more hid from his failures any more than he demanded praise for his accomplishments. He became a "surrogate father" for his brothers' 13 children along with raising his own three children. He was also able to finagle an "annulment" for his first marriage so he could marry again.
His disappointing run for president in 1980, however, could not overshadow his lifetime of achievements in the senate.
His niece Caroline introduced him at this year's convention with a list of reasons why he has worked to make up for his problems with alcohol or other failings be they public or private. No amount of embarrassment or
brain cancer could stop him from fulfilling his promise to speak.
Granted, Teddy's no saint; he made his mistakes and has seen and been through a lot.
But, that's why you have to admire him: he's not a dandy like the Bush boys. Teddy doesn't deny making mistakes; he learns from the mistakes he's made and is a better man for having done so.
With all your faults, we love you still, Teddy
