DICK Cheney is shrinking. The lame-duck veep was seen at Tyson's Corner Nordstrom in Virginia last week buying five Hickey Freeman suits off the rack. "They were size-44 regular," a source tells us. "Cheney was a 48 regular a year ago, which is a 40-pound drop. I guess he's been on a diet." For the record, the suits were two-button single-breasted, hand-crafted in upstate Rochester from 100 percent Tasmanian wool. Meanwhile, the suit Barack Obama wore last night was a union-made Hartmarx stitched in his hometown of Chicago, according to WWD.

WE HEAR . . .

THAT Don Imus' comeback is quietly going well. "Imus in the Morning" just added its 50th affiliate, passing the number that carried the program before he left CBS last year . . .

THAT veteran TV reporters are griping about the star treatment NBC News is giving Luke Russert, the just-hired son of the late Tim Russert, at the Democratic convention. "Real reporters are walking miles every day back and forth and around the Pepsi Center, while Luke is driven around on a golf cart," said one.

It looks & sounds more believable than if one of the old farts did. As far as the veteran reporters being PO'D, most of THEM had anchor desks, or just spot locations on the campaign floor. I think their jealousy is showing becuse they all had a long, rough training period and worked their way up to where they are, and Luke just walked in on his dad's coattails.

Maybe he'll shrink away to nothing and blow away in the wind like Sauron did when the One Ring was finally destroyed.
