How a Libby Pardon Would Hurt Guliani's Candidacy
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 01:32 PM by CorpGovActivist
Guliani was the Federal prosecutor who won the conviction of Marc Rich, whose 11th-hour pardon by President Clinton sparked outcry from the GOP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Guliani#Marc_Rich.2C_Pincus_Green_case

If Guliani supports a Libby pardon, he'd be seen as opposing a fellow prosecutor - Fitzgerald.

If Guliani were to vocally oppose a convenient pardon (as one might expect, given his own firsthand experience), this might anger the hardcore base of Cheneyites in the GOP primaries.

What's a tough-talking former prosecutor to do? Exactly what he is doing: dodging the issue in the MSM.

1. If BushCo decided to 'go' with Rudy, they'd let him go off base on this issue
And nudge-nudge, wink-wink to the Cheneyites.

But I don't think they're loving Mister "I Wed Three Wives/Do You Like My Dress?" Rudy...

2. All Giuliani needs to do is, as in your signature line, do nothing.
If he opposes a pardon, he angers the Cheney partrisans, and if he supports it, it can only hurt him among more moderate elements, so he will just ignore the issue. If he was truly courageous he would oppose a pardon and take the consequences, however, he is a Repug, so he would be uncapable of doing such a thing. He is flying high now in the polls, due in a large part to support from far right elements in the party, for mysterious reasons. He cannot afford to anger these elements so don't expect an announcement from him.

3. I Think the Dems Should Put Him on the Spot...
... by calling attention to his silence on the issue.

4. Cheney's approval is in the teens
Last I checked.

Cheney has no base.
