Guns Drawn, Cops Bust in on Citizens Who Plan to Protest RNC

Posted by The Uptake and Democracy Now at 3:00 PM on August 31, 2008.

The police where looking for Molotov cocktails, found young adults watching a movie.

This is video from the first of a series of raids Ramsey County Sherrifs deputies carried out on groups, people and locations related to plans to protest the Republican National Convention. This raid happened at 10pm on Friday night and Wyoming and Smith in St. Paul.

The pattern of detaining, searching and then releasing large numbers of people would be followed in the several raids that followed on Saturday.

2. Hey, we have the longest record of voting Democratic of any state in the nation
Don't think the people here support this shit, don't take a few bad apples and pretend they represent the entire state.

6. cops are right-wing thugs wherever they are
Cops aren't any different whether they're Mississippi peckerwood state troopers or Cambridge, Mass campus cops. All you need to be a cop is a low IQ and a fascist attitude.

3. What happened at the DNC - I didn't see much about
people being arrested there - did see the cages before the convention, but have no idea how many "protestors" or chaotic republicans were detained by police.

Not quite a police state yet - all those arrested are still alive - but we are getting there thanks to Bush II. We probably have some south american coronels teaching seminars to our cops right now.

5. Speaking as one who was there,
There weren't a huge number of arrests at the DNC. There were a few incidents where protesters went nuts, and where cops went over the top, but the total number of arrests wasn't that big, maybe a few dozen. Most protesters, including me, were left alone when they stuck to scheduled and pre-arranged marches instead of direct action (that's civil disobedience - expect to be arrested.)

Most of the enthusiasm of the DNC wasn't at the protests, it was at Mile High Stadium for Obama!

4. Its one step from what they do in Russia.
There, normally potential protesters eventually get released too, but AFTER the event that they were going to protest.
